The City of Shelby is seeking to spur redevelopment in downtown Shelby by seeking proposals for  a project to redo the historic Hotel Charles.

The city is hoping to turn the 32,000 square foot property into a boutique hotel with 35 to 38 rooms on the second and third floors. The  first floor can accommodate about 3000 feet of retail space and 5000 feet of food/beverage space.

One of my first jobs was working at a department store called A. V. Wrays, which is right around the corner on the court square in Shelby. An older gentleman would visit us every occasionally that lived in the Hotel Charles…he must have been one of the last residents. We called him “Neighbor”.

It would be wonderful to see Hotel Charles brought back to life!
