Gaston College’s basketball program has played nine games against teams ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll, dating to a Feb. 4, 1969 meeting with Gardner-Webb and future Basketball Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore at Gastonia’s old Groves Gym.

Unfortunately, Gaston College is 0-9 in those games, including 0-8 in the last three seasons. In spite of that record, new Rhinos head coach Benny Moss is excited about the possibility of opening his tenure against not only a ranked team but the No. 1 team in the NJCAA Division II poll in perennial power Davidson-Davie Community College.

“For us, it’s a great opportunity,” Moss said. “We want to play really good teams because we’ve got to get better as a team one game at a time throughout the year. Our goal is to win this region and get to the national tournament. So we want to play good teams, and what better way to start the season than to play the No. 1-ranked team in the country on the road.”
