Barbara Voorhees Receives  Order of the Long Leaf Pine

Barbara Voorhees,  former Director of the Glenn Foundation, has received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Governor Roy Cooper. Voorhees received the award on September 23rd at a reception at the Loray Mill.

The Glenn foundation was started by Carrie and Lena Glenn, who were perhaps unlikely philanthropists. One was a public school teacher and one was a librarian. The sisters left approximately $3 million to the Foundation, to be used for "religious, scientific, and literary and educational purposes"

Mrs. Voorhees has two children and two grandchildren, and lives with her husband, federal Judge Richard Voorhees.

 Embarrassing Panthers lose, again..

The Panthers lost to the Giants  21-18 on Sunday. That leaves the Panthers at 3-4, with 4 straight losses.
Passing was horrible, rushing was horrible, Red Zone offense was horrible, passing defense was-meh, rushing defense was actually not too shabby. Red Zone defense was-meh, special teams were not really special,  and coaching gets a "D".
Matt Rhule pulled QB Sam Darnold in the 4th quarter and replaced him with PJ Walker, to no avail.
What now? Christian McCaffrey is certainly a game changer, but even he may not be enough to turn around the bad mojo the Panthers have right now.
Hickory Grove Haunted Trail

For more than 20 years the Hickory Grove Haunted Trail has been scaring Gaston County residents - all in good fun!  The Trail was started by Chad Drury and friends, and Eric Woodward joined in the second year. For years they gave money to Habitat, the fire department, and schools, but now it's a full time business. They were unable to host the Haunted Trail last year because of COVID, but ticket sales are strong so far this season.

The trail is open  October 1st- 31st. More... Tickets are $20, children 6 and under are free (based on parents discretion)

Meet your new best friend!

Spirit is a 13-year-old Standardbred Gelding who stands at 16.3 hands. Spirit’s U.S. Trotting Association (USTA) name is Spirit Ho who ended up in the kill pen once his racing career was over. He was almost sent to Slaughter in Mexico but thankfully he was saved at the last minute! He arrived here at the rescue on October 10, 2020. When he arrived, he had Amish Road shoes on that have clearly been on for a long period of time. He got his shoes taken off the following day and he immediately showed that he was relieved of the pain by running and prancing around. He is a nice mover without a doubt, he is a trotter. He was worked inside the ring and he is sound and does amazing with listening to groundwork. Spirit is looking for his loving forever home! He has received a riding evaluation and he is sound but, after watching him closely we have determined he can only do light riding because he has a little issue with his back end doing anything else. He would be great if you just want to take a ride around the property! We will be getting a riding video soon hopefully. He is very kind-hearted even when first arriving he just wanted someone to show him love. He is a sweet guy who is just lucky to have another chance at life. He is a true sweetheart who loves to give love to any volunteers especially if you’re willing to give a good brushing in return.  He is a kind horse who has such a nice demeanor! He does not have a mean bone in his body.

Spirit is at Leilani Mae Horse rescue in Linden, N.C.

To follow Spirit’s progress please check out our Facebook Page and or our Instagram Page. For adoption information please call (904)236-8928.
