Gaston County plans in-person graduation ceremonies

Gaston County high school graduates can plan on an in person graduation ceremony this year. The ceremonies will be held outdoors. Although graduation is scheduled for May 29, but most graduations will be held Friday May 28. Graduating seniors will be broken up into different groups to allow for Covid protocols.

“Based on the current local and state mandates limiting the number of people we can have in both indoor and outdoor venues, and the the need to maintain the six feet of social distancing, the single Saturday morning ceremony we’ve had in years past is in not an option at this time,” district leaders say.

Last week, Gaston county commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance that would require groups of 25 or more to give an advance notice of 24 hours or more if they plan to  protest within 50 feet of Gaston County property.
Some people claim that this violates their First Amendment rights, while the County claims that the ordinance will keep both protestors and law enforcement safe.
