Good morning, it's David. Today is Tuesday, June 1st.

The above photo is Caromont Heath Park (formerly FUSE Stadium) in Gastonia on opening night last Thursday.

Today will be partly sunny and nice, with a  high of 79. Tonight will be mainly clear, with a low of 59.
Baseball is in downtown Gastonia!

Although the Honey Hunters got spanked, it was still a great opening night at Caromont Health Park last Thursday. Magic Johnson was in town to throw out the first pitch.  Attendance was capped at 2000 through Sunday. That was to give fans room to socially distance, and also to allow the staff and management to work out any bugs.

A full first phase of the project is expected to open in early 2022 with an additional 1,300 slot machines.

Unemployment work-search requirements change

If you are receiving North Carolina unemployment, beginning June 6th you will be required to contact at least 3 employers weekly to continue receiving benefits. Claimants should contact NCWorks.gov and register for a job-seeker account.
Questions have been raised about the need for further "no work"  requirements for unemployment benefits as local businesses, especially restaurants, have trouble staffing their kitchens and dining rooms.

Irish pub in Belmont-Psych...

There was sign in the former Doffer's Pizza in Belmont that said an Irish Pub was coming soon. Evidently that is not the case. We'll post more as info is available.

Kyle Larson wins Coca-Cola 600

Kyle Larson won all 4 stages of the longest race on the NASCAR schedule on Sunday. The win gave Ric Hendrick and Hendrick Motorsports their 269th win, passing Petty Enterprises.

Belmont City Council approved Del Webb’s development plans, which will include the construction of a .73 mile segment of the new South Fork Parkway.  The Parkway will provide a connection between Armstrong Ford Rd and Nixon Rd in Phase 1 of the project.  The developer has also agreed to mitigate their impacts through improvements at 7 different intersections.

In addition to roadway improvements, the developer has committed to the design and construction of 2.7 miles of 8′ wide natural surface trail along the South Fork River.
