Today's Weather: Today we will have some sun and (surprise) a thunderstorm in the afternoon, with a high of  79. Tonight we will have  occasional evening rain and a thunderstorm; otherwise, mostly cloudy , with a low of 67.
City of Gastonia exploring cleaning up former golf course for recreation area

The City of Gastonia is exploring cleaning up and developing a former golf course located off of Linwood Road West in Gastonia. The 147 acre site was bought in 2011 by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and has sat unused and undeveloped since then. The City of Gastonia now owns the property.

We told you last week that the Golden Palace on South Union had closed, and now the building is for sale.

Did yo know that Barristers in downtown Gastonia has a patio? They have great food and service- the patio is a plus!

Twin Tops is still open for takeout only. They are having some issues bringing the building up to code as new owners.

Carowinds debuted it's multicultural Grand Carnivale Celebration Saturday, including international cuisine and a nightly Spectacle of Color Parade.

This year's honey products are ONLY available at Ford's Seed Store on East Main Street, Gastonia, NC.. We suggest you go next week because supplies are limited.
McAdenville opens canoe and kayak launch

McAdenville recently opened a canoe and kayak launch at the trailhead of the McAdenville South Fork River Greenway.  The new launch features a sloped  track for boats, and steps down to the water. It is the first canoe & kayak launch downstream of the McAdenville dam.

I hadn't heard of this- book a private pool for you and your guests by the hour. Check out an app called swimply.com. There are several pools in Gaston County available. Most offer other amenities- grills, trampolines, pool toys, bathrooms, etc.
CaroMont Doc sues Atrium Health


Caromont doctor Barry Scanlan has sued his former employer and it's employees alleging he was wrongly terminated.  Dr. Scanlan accuses Atrium Heath of firing him without cause, and not properly paying him his benefits after termination.

Dr. Scanlan had founded Riverwood Medical in 1997 with doctors Mitch Costner and David Lane. They subsequently sold the practice to Atrium, and Scanlan continued working there.

According to Scanlan, Atrium has yet to provide a reason for his firing.

Sewage spills into the Catawba River

More than 850,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the Catawba River near Old Down Road on Friday. The spill occurred at the Paw Creek Lift Station,  The spill was downstream from Mountain Island Lake, which supplies most of Gaston County with water.

A swimming ban was issued in the Lake Wylie cove where the spill occurred.
Jobless rate falls: North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell to 4.6% in June, which is better than the national figure of 5.9%. The number of people employed in North Carolina, about 4.5 million, is still about 124,000 fewer than pre-pandemic. (Bureau of Labor Statistics) Gaston County's unemployment rate was 4.8 % as of May 2021.
