Council votes to remove statue
Gaston County's "Council of Understanding" has voted 7-5 to remove the Confederate statue in front of the courthouse. Originally composed of 6 members in favor of keeping the statue, and six opposed, the Council ultimately voted to recommend to the county commiossioners to remove the statue. It is unclear at this point what will happen to the statue. One possibility is returning it to the Daughters of the Confederacy, or giving it the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Sammy's Pub Holding Event for family of boy killed in crash
Four members of the Obester family were killed in a crash about a week ago, leaving behind 14 year old son Jacob, who was not with the family at the time.
So today, Sammy's Pub, along with Creative Solutions, the Belmont Police, and other restaurants are holding an event in downtown Belmont. Sammy's has setup an outdoor dining area, and will donate half of their sales today to a fund set up for the family. Cash donations will also be accepted.
The driver that caused the crash has been charged with 5 counts of second-degree murder.

Could Duke Energy's Coal Plants be in jeopardy?
Two years ago, the N.C. utilities commission decided that customers, and the not the utility, should pay for coal ash cleanup. That bill could be as high as $9 billion over the next 20 years. But the N.C. Attorney General and the Sierra Club have appealed, and it is expected to go before the N.C. Supreme Court again in August. Also, the fate of coal plants in general could be up in the air, as studies by the Sierra Club show that coal fired plants are more expensive than using power form other Duke plants or buying power on the open market.
