Good morning, it's David. Today is Wednesday April 14th.

We really prefer to focus on the good things happening in Gaston County. Unfortunately, we have two stories today about men with apparent mental health issues that were known before violence occurred. I used to work in mental health, and I don't have any answers, but surely there is a way to intervene when a person is obviously a danger to themselves and others, before these tragedies occur.

Today will be partly sunny with a thunderstorm in spots late in the afternoon, with a  high of 81. Tonight there will be a couple of evening showers, otherwise cloudy, with a low of 57.

Roger Self  sentencing hearing begins at 9:30 this morning

Roger Self plead guilty pursuant to Alford to two counts of second -degree murder Monday afternoon. In May 2018 Self drove his car into a Bessemer City restaurant and killed his daughter and daughter-in-law.
According to sources and family members Self had been dealing with psychiatric issues  prior to the incident, although those issues may not have been enough to warrant an insanity plea, according to Self's attorney Rick Beam. However, those issues may be enough to lighten Self's sentence, which could be between 12 to 70 years.

Nationwide there have been 6 cases of women between 18-48 developing rare and  severe blood clots
. “Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare,” the CDC and FDA said in a joint press release. “COVID-19 vaccine safety is a top priority for the federal government, and we take all reports of health problems following COVID-19 vaccination very seriously.”
