Hubert Davis makes history as first black coach of UNC
Davis, 50, spent 9 years as an assistant coach for Dean Smith. He also played for Smith from 1988-1992. He is the first black coach in the history of the program. “I am honored and humbled to be given the opportunity to lead this program,’’ Davis said in a statement released by UNC. “I would not be here without Coach Dean Smith, Coach Bill Guthridge and Coach Roy Williams; they taught me so much – and I’m eager to walk their path in my shoes and with my personality.”

Dominion Energy asking for 7.23% rate hike
Dominion Energy North Carolina Gas, based in Gastonia, has asked the state for a rate hike, averaging 7.23% overall. The average residential customer's bill would go from $58 to $62.
Dominion is starting two "green programs." One would introduce hydrogen into natural gas. The mixture would burn efficiently while significantly reducing the carbon produced.This would be a pilot program not yet available to customers.
The second would be a "Green Therm" program, which would allow customers to buy blocks of renewable natural gas, produced from landfills, wastewater plants and other biogas sources, reducing their carbon footprint.
It's a rare occurrence, but a horse has tested positive for rabies in Gaston County.The horse has died and no other animals or humans were injured. A veterinarian was treating a sick horse on the 300 block of Robert Road in Cherryville, when it was determined that the horse was showing sings of rabies. The horse died and samples sent to a lab concluded that the horse did indeed have rabies.
Deshaun Watson? Nope, Sam Darnold
The Carolina Panthers picked up Sam Darnold from the New York Jets. Darnold, a USC alum, was picked up by the Jets in the 3rd round of the 2018 draft. He has one year left on his contract, and a 5th year option available for $18 million, should the Panthers decide to go that route.
The Panthers had been considering Deshaun Watson, but recent sexual assault allegations have stalled league wide interest in the former Clemson quarterback.
NASCAR drive Corey Lajoie surprised Gaston Christian middle school student Will Armstrong recently. Armstrong was reading a letter he had written for a class project when Lajoie surprised him by coming onstage. See video here...
Gaston County hot spot for industrial development?
Donny Hicks, Executive Director for Gaston County Economic Development Commission said Thursday that he believes Gaston County is poised to be a hotbed for economic development. He said Gaston county could see 6 to 8
million square feet of new industrial development few years. Gaston County has had about 8 million square feet of development in the last 30 years.
There are already multiple business park projects underway. Gaston County benefits from the westward push of Charlotte Metro industrial development, proximity to the airport, and the I-85 corridor.

As of Wednesday, everyone 16 and up can get vaccinated
But...
Pfizer is the only vaccine currently offered to 16- and 17-year-olds. Moderna and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are for people age 18 and up. And no COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized for use in people younger than 16...yet.

We have had 25,052 positive Gaston County Covid19 tests to date, and 411 people have died due to the virus. Currently 34 people are hospitalized, and 2 people are on a ventilator. The largest group affected is ages 25-49. See interactive graphic here...
