Ella Mae Wiggins
Ella Mae Wiggins mural by world renowned artist Osiris Rain to be unveiled
Next Monday, September 14th in Bessemer City, there will be a mural unveiling featuring Ella Mae Wiggins. Wiggins was a was a union organizer and balladeer who was killed during the Loray Mill strike in Gastonia in 1929.
The mural to be unveiled is by artist Osiris Rain. Rain is an internationally acclaimed American muralist, fine artist, and post-contemporary figurative painter. Check out some of his amazing work here.
There will be tours of Wiggns grave at 4:00 PM, with the mural unveiling at 5:00 PM. The mural is large- 16’x50’, and we hear it is spectacular. There will be speakers, food trucks, live music by local legend David Childers, and voices from the UNC Charlotte musical Threads. The mural will be located at the corner of 12th and Virginia in Bessemer City.
Wild Wing Cafe is going, going, gone….
Wild Wing Cafe in Gastonia is gone. Originally the chain had about 40 locations, but declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and now has 15-20 higher performing locations remaining.
If the interwebs are to be believed, a Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers is eyeing that location. I have had their food out west, and it is yum! I don’t see Gastonia listed as an upcoming location for them, but it may be too soon…
Sumner Group makes list again
On a list compiled by the Charlotte Business Journal, Gastonia’s Sumner Group is among largest advertising and marketing agencies in the Metro Charlotte area based on number of employees,
The Sumner Group is located in downtown Gastonia and has 14 employees. Some of their major clients are Watson Insurance, GSM Services, Dr. Ted Injury Law, and Mattamuskeet Goose Club. Their top local executive is Jacque Sumner.

Lotus Chophouse & Sushi Bar is moving
According to their Facebook page, Lotus Chophouse & Sushi Bar is moving. They don’t say where, but we are hearing that they are moving to the old Rodi space in the Gem of Ashley.
Rodi was a popular Mediterranean-American bar and grill that closed about ten years ago. They had live music on the weekends. Located at 245 West Garrison Blvd in Gastonia, it will be really cool to see that space alive and active again. Hoping Lotus will have live music as well.

Did you know that the Hoyle House is the oldest known house in Gaston County? The exact construction date is not know, but it was before 1810. The house was built with German construction techniques out of logs, with corner beams.
(Free Event) Join us September 12th from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. as we celebrate our Annual Open House. Enjoy strolling the grounds, watching demonstrations by local craftsmen, listening to live music on the porch and soaking in the Homestead’s unique history and heritage. Crystal Fountains will be playing throughout the day. Milltown Meats BBQ will be on site with their amazing food truck and Easy Peasy Handcrafted Beverages, so please join us for lunch! Board Members and volunteers will be available to answer your questions and the house will be open for guests to explore.
This event was very well attended last year, but not to worry-there is ample parking available.
