Good morning Gaston County! David here…
Lot’s of new projects coming out of the ground this week…Gaston County is jumping! I am especially excited about the OMB brewery being built on the river in Mount Holly, and Gaston Aquatics new facility in Dallas. But there’s lots more!
Today's weather: Very warm with some sun, and a high of 79.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy with a low of 58.

New Hope Plaza is now leasing- and new tenants
New Hope Plaza is a new strip shopping center located on South New Hope and Titman Roads in Gastonia (near Piedmont Community Charter School). There are two separate buildings and a drive through. The only tenants we are aware of so far, are a Bruder’s Ice Cream, a Pilates studio, and a Project LeanNation.

McKinney at work

Concept drawing by McKinney
Artist at work on DAR mural
We told you recently about the new mural in Belmont honoring Major William Chronicler and the South Fork Boys. The South Fork boys, led by Maj. William Chronicle of Belmont, helped the Patriots win the Revolutionary War Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. Maj. Chronicle was killed in the fight.World famous muralist Boyce McKinney, of Stanley, began painting the mural last week when this photo was taken.
The local William Chronicle DAR Chapter is raising funds to finance the mural project and needs community support. Calm Co. CBD Dispensary in Mount Holly
What’s up with the Gaston County CBD dispensaries?
You have probably notices CBD dispensaries popping up around Gaston County. You may or may not have noticed stores selling CBD infused drinks. It looks like that’s all about to come to a stop in November due to a federal law.
Congress was explicit about its desire to more strictly regulate intoxicating hemp products, and new legislation accomplishes that goal. Absent additional legislation, hemp-based products like THCA, THC-O, delta-8, HHC, and many others will no longer meet the definition of legal hemp after the new definition kicks in. Instead, those products will be considered illegal marijuana, a Schedule I drug under current federal law
It is worth noting that state law in this area has not changed and all the hemp products discussed above remain legal as a matter of state law. It is possible that state law could change, but unless it does, state law will conflict with federal law come next November. That conflict begs the question of whether and to what extent the federal government will attempt to enforce federal law in states like North Carolina.
If the new law is enforced in North Carolina, most of these businesses will suffer. I don’t have a dog in the fight, but 88% of Americans support legalizing marijuana for medical or recreational use.

The Belmont Drive-In Theater opens April 10
The drive-in movie experience is alive and well in Belmont. Opened in 1948, the drive-in has been a family favorite for generations. I remember as a kid playing on the playground in front of the screen at our local drive-in. And anything that came from the concession stand was a 10 year old’s gourmet treat!
You can check out some of the fascinating history of the Belmont Drive-In here.

Gaston Aquatics under construction
Gaston Aquatics steel is up!
The Gaston Aquatics facility in Dallas is coming right along. Micah Vanderburg, Project Foreman, says the estimated completion date is mid-October. They are located at 642 West Carpenter Street, but another entrance is planned.
Very exciting for Gaston County!

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery has broken ground in Mount Holly
At long last, Olde Mecklenburg Brewery has broken ground on Mount Holly. According to the project manager, the brush will be cleared allowing a river view, while leaving some of the larger trees.
The facility is expected to follow OMB's signature "Brauhaus and Biergarten" model, featuring a large outdoor space, a family-friendly atmosphere, and a full-service restaurant menu.
The brewery is expect to open sometime between June and December of this year. They are located at 725 Elm Street in Mount Holly, and on the Catawba River near the Dutchman’s Creek tributary.

After almost seven years, Belmont’s Cinnaholic Bakery has closed. Their last day was Friday, March 27th. Co-owner Carrie Tanner shared the news “with a heavy heart…It takes consistent community support and a dedicated team to keep something like this going, and over time it became harder to maintain the stability needed to continue…I look forward to spending my free time with all my grand-kids and family and embarking on a new journey with them.”
