Western & Southern tennis tournament coming to the River District?

Regular readers will know that The River District is a 1400 acre development  just across the Catawba River from Gaston County. It is also just west of the the Charlotte Douglas Airport.Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte have committed $95 million to help build a tennis complex in the River district to bring the Western & Southern Open professional tennis tournament to Charlotte. Why does this matter to Gaston County? Because it would literally be right next door. Money for our restaurants, hotels, and more. Plus, how cool would it be to have a tennis tournament 10 minutes away? The fly in in the ointment? There may be a couple. First, it looks like the State General Assembly will include incentives for the tennis complex, but will they, and for how much?Second, Cincinnati is pulling out the stops to keep the tournament. They had a noticeable increase in attendance this year, and in July, the Ohio Governor approved a budget that included $22.5 million commitment to the tournament. So we'll see....we are keeping our fingers crossed!

What is Belmont doing about pedestrian safety?Belmont has had eight pedestrian related crashes this year. That is higher than any of the six previous years; one crash was fatal and one sent a child to the hospital in critical condition.

Mayor Marc Seelinger called an emergency meeting last Friday after a young child was injured and sent to the hospital. The child has since been released, and is expected to have a full recovery.

Rick Jordan, who is currently running for mayor, said he was not shocked at all. “It was only a matter of time . . . For every year of inaction, you see in other cities, you fall five years behind,” Jordan said.Ideas discussed at the meeting included dropping the speed limit to 25 mph, forming a traffic advisory committee, adopting the State's Zero Vision initiative, and reducing red tape for citizens to have speed bumps installed.Police Chief Boyce Falls also stated that they need help with hiring more crossing guards.

Panthers lose to Saints 20-17 on Monday night football. The Panther's offense was offensive, and not in a good way. Plus the Saints has more of everything: time of possession, running yards, receiving yards, you name it.One bright spot- linebacker Frankie Luvu continues to impress. On a down note, linebacker Shaq Thompson went out in the first quarter with an injury when Saint's lineman Trevor Penning  rolled on Thompson's right shin and ankle. Reportedly it's just a high ankle  sprain.
