D.R. Horton's Gastonia project a goAfter the Gastonia Planning Commission gave their approval last month, the Gastonia City Council gave the go ahead for D.R.Horton's proposed 104 acre project off of East Hudson Blvd. The project calls for 700 residential units of varying types. Documents say that the project will include
133 attached town homes, 207 single family homes, and 348 apartments.Company representatives state that infrastructure construction will begin soon, with home closings and resident move-ins possibly happening in late 2024.
Two former Cleveland County leaders have additional ties to the Two Kings CasinoA former county commissioner and former county manager were among early supporters of the Two Kings Casino in Kings Mountain, and have more ties to the project and it's players than was previously known.New evidence show that both David Dear, former Cleveland County manager and Eddie Holbrook, former Cleveland County commissioner, either own land around the casino site, or have ties to Wallace Cheves. Cheves has a background in video poker, sweepstakes gaming, riverboat gambling. He also has had judgements against two of his companies totaling over $6 million dollars. Cheves says that both judgements have been satisfied.
Santa has a Christmas wish of his ownCan you help?Joe Greene owns the 161 Flea Market in Bessemer City. At Christmastime he dresses as Santa, gives train rides, and gives out hundreds of candy canes.But Joe is a diabetic, and has already endured two open heart surgeries. His kidneys are failing and needs a kidney transplant. If he doesn't find a donor, he will have to go on dialysis. Obviouly that will impact his Santa duties. “Even if I don’t find one for myself, maybe they find it for somebody else,” Greene said.There are currently approximately 92,000 people waiting for kidney transplants nationwide, according to the American Kidney Fund.Interested in becoming a kidney donor? Gastonia ready to ditch the ditch?If you live in or travel to downtown Gastonia, you've seen the ditch- the big indention where the train tracks go through downtown.On the south side of the ditch the city is beginning to transform. A new downtown apartment building, the SPARK entertainment district and new surrounding businesses are part of the change. On the north side there are low income homes, and run-down buildings that were once businesses.“A lot of areas north of the railroad ditch have been impacted," Assistant City Manager Quinton McPhattter said. "You have areas of significant poverty." .To address this, the City of Gastonia is seeking $2 million in grant monies for project CHANGE. Project CHANGE stands for Connecting Highland: Access, Neighborhood Growth, Equity. A goal of the project is to explore options to cap the ditch and improve Highway 7.

Papa's and Beer in Dallas is hoping to open in mid-December. The restaurant is ready- and beautiful- new bar, new equipment, new parking lot, and they have all of their permits except their liquor license. Originally out of Asheville, Dallas will be Papas and Beer's 9th location.Our friend Jorge Torres did the super cool murals at the Dallas location. You can check out the menus here.

Cherokees lose casino fight, so they open a marijuana dispensaaryGet stoned and gamble all night long
The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indian are opening the largest medical marijuana retail store in the U.S., pending approval of the tribe's Cannibals Control Board.Non-tribe members who are 21 or older and medically qualified will be able to purchase marijuana.The tribe has it's own medical marijuana growing operation in Cherokee, where marijuana is grown in greenhouses.

Christmas in the City is on Sunday, December 4 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM in downtown Gastonia and CaroMont Health Park. The event kicks off with the Gaston County Jaycees Christmas Parade down Main Avenue to CaroMont Health Park at 5:00 PM.
The City of Gastonia Vendor Marketplace will begin at 5:00 PM at CaroMont Health Park and the Keep Gastonia Beautiful Tree Lighting* will begin at CaroMont Health Park following the conclusion of the parade. Both the tree lighting and marketplace will conclude at 8:00 PM. The event will feature Santa, entertainment, vendors, and more! More information regarding the parade, tree lighting, and marketplace will be posted in the coming months.

Panthers ugly loss to Baltimore 13-3
Good defense, no offense-did we say dumpster fire?The Panther's defense held the Ravens to 13 points on Sunday, but could only generate 3 points of offense.So Baker Mayfield had another chance to show what he could do...but he didn't. Mayfield is now 1-5 as a Carolina starter. He also had two interceptioons in the last four minutes. The score was actually tied at three all entering the fourth quarter. But Carolina committed three turnovers in the last nine minutes, while scoring zero points.Sam Darnold should start next week against the Broncos, as PJ Walker still has a high ankle sprain, but head coach Steve Wilkes says he will review the tape and make a decision later in the week.Carolina needs to pick what hopefully will be a franchise QB in the first round of the 2023 draft. Ideally that pick will work out as well as Christian McCaffrey did.
