Looks like $35 million project moving forward, finallyThe Gaston County Board of Commissioners last week  approved incentives for Project Exchange.County documents show plans for a 305,760 square foot industrial building to be  built at Highway 321 and I-85. The property is near Daimler Trucks North America's facilities in Gastonia.“It’s a great site, but an incredibly difficult site to access,"  "The company has figured out, after extensive research, how they can get in there to make this site work. ... This is a site that has wanted to be industrial for a long time, and we’ll finally be able to do it.” said Donny Hicks, executive director of the Gaston County Economic Development Commission.

County eliminating Community Service Support Division, saving $1.5 millionGASTONIA, N.C. – Following a thorough review of the services offered to the Gaston County community, County Manager Matt Rhoten announced today the elimination of the Community Support Services Division.Eleven positions (one of which is currently vacant) are being eliminated as the county seeks to ensure residents are getting the most efficient service delivery for their tax dollars. The departments under CSS – Hope United Survivor Network, Veterans Services and ACCESS -- will be reassigned within the county and their daily operations and service are unaffected. The work being done on the opioid crisis and homelessness in Gaston County will be shifted to other staff within the Department of Health and Human Services.“These are very difficult decisions we don’t take lightly, knowing these changes impact valued staff and their families,” Rhoten said. “Our CSS staff did excellent work, but we also have a responsibility to our taxpayers to be as efficient with our resources as possible, and sometimes that means having to make a hard choice.“We remain very much committed to working on these larger issues of homelessness and opioid addiction and recovery, but part of that work will be a greater partnership and empowerment of community organizations committed to tackling these complex questions.”Through the elimination of the positions, which includes salaries, benefits and other associated operating costs, the county projects to save nearly $1.5 million annually. The county is currently assessing the future use of the CSS building on Long Avenue, which could lead to additional cost savings.

Highland Tech has a marching band for the first time in 24 years!Highland School of Technology is known for its long-standing tradition and commitment to academic excellence.  Now, the school’s band program is committed to establishing a tradition of its own.

For the first time since Highland opened in 2000, the band is fielding a halftime marching show during home football games.  It’s a sign that the band program is growing under director Noah Williams’ leadership. Williams, who took over as director in 2022, is working to give Highland students a marching band experience that is similar to other high schools.

“It has been a goal of mine to have a full marching band program here,” said Williams.  “When the students expressed an interest in learning and performing a halftime show this year, I told them, ‘Let’s do it.’”

Gaston College wins 5th straight behind first 30-point game since 2022

by Richard Walker

This preseason, NCAA Division I coaches were frequent visitors to Gaston College basketball practices.

Many were there to see 6-foot-2 sophomore point guard Jordan Brown.

Kept out of the season-opener by injury and slowed for the next few games, Brown keeps getting healthier and healthier.

On Monday night in a 103-86 win over Guilford Tech at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School, Brown also had one of the best games in school history as he scored 31 points to become Gaston College's first player to reach 30 points game in a game since February 2022.

"That's what we saw the whole preseason," first-year Rhinos coach Benny Moss said of Brown. "Those high ankle sprains are tough."I thought we did a good job of working him back easy in the first few games and not overdoing it. He said after the second half (on Saturday) that he felt normal and comfortable. And he obviously played really well today."

Brown hit his first five shots from the field and finished 10 of 13 overall (six of eight on 3-pointers) while making five of six free throws for 31 points to go with six rebounds and three assists.
