Massive River District to adjoin Gaston County
Crescent is the lead developer of a massive new project just across the Catawba River in Mecklenburg County called The River District. The project will be directly across the river from south Belmont.Construction could start by year end on the first phase. That would include
approximately 8 million square feet of office space, 500,000 square feet of retail, 2,500 homes, 2,500 multifamily units and 1,000 hotel rooms upon completion.
The first phase will be a 70-acre, mixed-use community called Westrow.
Westrow will include several different housing styles, restaurants, shops, and office space, in addition to green space. It will also include 10% affordable housing.
Gaston County School Board votes on mask policy, bonusThe School Board has voted to make masks optional for all students and staff beginning November 29th.They also approved a one time $1000 bonus for all school employees. There are 3800 employees, so the approximate payout will be $3.8 million. Employees must have been hired prior to September 1, 2021 and must be a permanent employee.
Two public meetings scheduled this week concerning Piedmont LithiumThere were two public meetings scheduled this week regarding Piedmont Lithium's plans to build a lithium mine in northwest Gaston County. The first was last night, and the second is a virtual hearing Thursday from 7-9 PM.Piedmont Lithium wants to build a mine on 1500 acres they already own. Lithium is a key component in electric car batteries, and they already have a contract with Tesla.There is also a group of citizens and businesses called Stop Piedmont Lithium that are opposing those plans.Info on hearings and Webex links here...

South Point Red Raider protestThe South Point Red Raider mascot is back in the news. The Red Raider mascot has been used by South Point High School since 1947, but some students, tribal citizens and others want the mascot replaced.Some blame the movement to replace on Cancel Culture. Others disagree.
“They’re inaccurate, they’re demeaning, they’re stereotypical,” rally organizer Hayley Brezeale said. “They really teach especially non-native students incorrect information about us. It makes us look very violent. Just the information itself is historically inaccurate.”The rally was to be held yesterday at 4:30, just before the Gaston county School board meeting.GA suggests that they change the name to the "South Point Caucasians". Nellie's Southern Kitchen headed to Las VegasThe Jonas Brothers and family are teaming up with a New York City firm to open an 11,000 square foot restaurant in Las Vegas.
"To open a restaurant in the heart of the iconic Las Vegas strip is thrilling, and I know my Grandma Nellie would be truly amazed seeing her name in lights," says Kevin Jonas Sr. Their Belmont restaurant opened in June 2016.
Most retail stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. We talked to Eastridge Mall, Kohl's, and Dick's Sporting Goods- all plan to be closed. All Walmarts will be closed, according to their website. Government offices, the stock market, and banks will be closed. The stock market will be open a partial day: 9:30 AM- 1 PM on Black Friday.

Gaston County Health Dept offering free Pfizer vaccines to childrenThe Gaston County Health Department is offering the Pfizer COVID vaccine to children from 5-11 years of age. The State has sent 1200 doses of the vaccine to Gaston County. Currently the Pfizer vaccine is the only one approved for children.
The Health Department has set up a separate portion of their facility at 991 W. Hudson Blvd. specifically for children’s vaccines.You can make an appointment here...
