rue21 to close all stores, including GastoniaAfter declaring bankruptcy for the third time, rue21 is closing all stores and plans to sell it's intellectual property, which includes it's website.At one time the company had 1,000 stores, but now it plans to shutter it's 540 primarily mall based stores by May 31st, including the Gastonia store.

Got earthquakes?An earhtquake was reported overnight Sunday night about 6 miles southeast of Belmont, near the Charlotte Douglas Airport.Measured at 2.2 magnitude, earthquakes of this size are not normally felt, but detected by seismograph.

Family dog attacks raccoon with rabies off of Hickory Grove RoadA family dog attacked a raccoon with rabies along Carolyn Circle off of Hickory Grove Road last Tuesday.The raccoon was impounded by Gaston County Animal Care & Enforcement, and sent for testing. The raccoon was confirmed to have rabies. The dog owner were advised to get their dog a rabies booster from a veterinarian.This is the second confirmed case of rabies in Gaston County this year.

Local entities receive Spirit of North Carolina awardsThree local entities received Spirit of North Carolina awards from the United Way last month. The three were Gaston County Schools, Gaston County Government, and Food Lion.Gaston County schools held a district wide campaign to encourage students and teachers to consider and support local needs.From October through December of 2023, Gaston County Government scheduled in person meetings with United Way or affected agencies for every governmental department. The also sponsored a Turkey Raffle and and a Jeans and Jerseys Day.A Food Lion Feeds team composed of 15 volunteers supported a local family by providing nutritious foods for three months. The team also volunteered at an Adult Day Care Center.

More bad news for Northlake MallExpress Inc., a men's and women's retailer, has declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware.The store at Northlake Mall was among the 95 stores that are closing. A sale has already begun, but it is unclear when the store will actually close.

Gaston College's dreams of a return trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series were dashed on Saturday in a 12-5 loss to Florence-Darlington Tech in the 2024 Region 10 tournament championship game.

The Rhinos finished 49-9 overall for a school-record for victories and winning percentage. Gaston College softball coach Mike Steuerwald's program also drew NJCAA national poll consideration by receiving votes in nine of the last 10 polls of the season.

"It was a great season with a lot of accomplishments," Steuerwald said. "It just didn't end the way we hoped that it would."

No. 1-ranked Gaston College overcame an early deficit to down Spartanburg Methodist 9-1 in Saturday's second round Region 10 baseball tournament game at Lexington County, S.C., Stadium.

The Rhinos (51-6) yielded a single run in the top of the first inning before starter and winner Landon Carr shutout the Pioneers the rest of the way.

Gaston College scored four times after two were out in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good. Seth Christmas' 2-out, 2-run double drove in the first two runs. The other two runs scored on a Ben Karpowicz RBI single and a wild pitch.

The Rhinos then ended the scheduled nine-inning contest in the bottom the seventh by the eight-run mercy rule.

Karpowicz had a two-run double, a wild pitch tallied another run and Tyler Burke closed the game out with a two-out, two-run walkoff single.

"Anytime you can throw two complete games in two games, that's huge for a pitching staff," said Gaston College coach Shohn Doty, whose team got a five-inning no-hitter from Evan Vandenbosch in Friday's 13-0 opening round victory over USC Salkehatchie. "Kudos to Landon. He got off to a rough start before he got settled in. He gave up one baserunner in the last four innings."
