Today is May 24, 2022.
Now we are about 20 days into of our summer drive-about. We left Fort Myers Beach Sunday morning, and currently we are just north of Lake City Florida, where my grandparents are buried.Today we are headed west to Pensacola, and then New Orleans.

Monday May 30 is Memorial DayWhat is the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day? Memorial Day honors those who who were killed in service. Veterans Day honors all those who have served.

No fireworks at the Whitewater Center this year for Memorial DayIf you were looking forward to the fireworks at the Whitewater Center, you'll have to look elsewhere.Due to multiple abrupt changes in the firework permitting process prescribed by Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte, the Whitewater Center will no longer feature a fireworks display on Sunday, May 29th, 2022.The live music, yoga, Memorial Day Trail Race, and other activities are still scheduled.
So what's the deal with baby formula?Have you seen pics on Facebook showing empty shelves in Gaston County stores where baby formula should be? Or announcing that Target or somebody else has a shelf full?Turns out Abbott Nutrition manufactures about 40% baby formula in the US. In February they recalled Similac and other baby formulas because of possible contamination by Cronobacter Sakazakii. Sickness from Cronobacter in babies will usually start with a fever and poor feeding, crying, or very low energy. Some babies may also have seizures. Babies with these symptoms should be taken to a doctor. The plant has since been closed, and some formula has been recalled.How to check if your Abbott baby formula is safe
Gaston foster parents neededThere are over 400 foster children needing placement Gaston County, according to social worker Candace Williams. Currently there are only 49 active foster parents available. Williams says because there is no other option, children are often sent to other counties.One option is temporary foster care. Gaston apartment projects moving aheadTwo new Gaston County apartment projects are under way.The first, in downtown Gastonia at 147 West Main Avenue, will officially begin work this week. The site, formerly a pocket park, will now be the home of a 6 story building with 90 apartments.In Mount Holly, Atlanta based Penler has bought a 31.5 acre site on the river near the Stowe YMCA. They plan to build a 314 unit apartment complex on the site. The plan may also include a restaurant and brewery/
Flu and COVID numbers
Hickory is no Gastonia, but...
According to US News & World Report, it turns out that Hickory is the cheapest place in the U.S. to live. Quality of life was rated 6.1, and overall value was 8.9. Green Bay Wisconsin was 2nd cheapest, and Huntsville Alabama was third.Hickory was ranked as the #3 best area to live in, in North Carolina, after Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte. Unfortunately Gaston county wasn't on the list, but it should have been!
Speculative industrial building proposed for Belmont
Charlotte based Keith Corp. is proposing development of 143,020 square foot industrial building in Belmont. If approved, the project would be built on a 22.7 acre site near Belmont Abbey College. Their request is set to go before the Belmont City Council in the coming weeks.
