Wild Wings Cafes in trouble- possible liquidationFormer Panther's wide receiver Mushin Muhammed II investments in Gastonia aren't working out so well.First Backyard Burgers closed and is facing Chapter 7 liquidation, and now Wild Wing's Cafe is trying to reorganize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The U.S. Bankruptcy Administrator for the Western District of North Carolina filed a motion in late April seeking to convert the Wild Wing's case to a Chapter 7 liquidation. Chapter 7 is considered a liquidation bankruptcy: it doesn't require a repayment plan but the business has to sell some assets to pay creditors. Chapter 11 is considered a reorganization bankruptcy that allows businesses to maintain their operations while creating a plan to repay creditors. The Gastonia Wild Wings occupancy costs are $15,500 per month, less than the average of $18,000 per Wild Wings  location. But according to the bankruptcy administrator, “Even free rent would not generate a net profit for the Gastonia location.”

Gaston College finishes seventh in NJCAA beach volleyball national championships

Gaston College's beach volleyball team finished strong in the National Junior College Athletic Association championships with a pair of victories on the event's final day for a seventh-place overall finish.

The Rhinos defeated Trinidad State, Col., 3-2 and Bryant & Stratton, Wisc., 3-0 at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala., to close out their play in the nine-team event that began action on Thursday.

For the second straight season, coach Rachel Noreika's team opened in a three-team pool that included eventual national champion Palm Beach State, Fla.

The Panthers defeated St. John's River State 3-0 to win the NJCAA's inaugural title in 2023 at Tavares, Fla., and won 3-0 over Region 10 champion Richard Bland 3-0 to win this year's title.

"I think we had the toughest pool top to bottom both Thursday and Friday," said Noreika, whose team finished the season with a 10-24 overall record that includes 2-16 against four-year schools. "So coming into today with an 0-4 record was tough. But the team really pulled together today and fought for each other to end the championships on a high note."

Gaston College pitcher Connor Frail had five no-hit innings on Monday night's elimination game against USC Sumter.

No. 1 Gaston College advances into Region 10 winner's bracket final

A season of extraordinary accomplishments and expectations came to an end for Gaston College in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Region 10 tournament at Lexington County, S.C., Stadium.

The Rhinos, ranked No. 1 for much of the year by the National Junior College Athletic Association and other polls, saw their season end with a 51-8 overall record that set a school-record for single-season victories.

Gaston College lost 11-4 to Florence-Darlington Tech in the tournament's winner's bracket final, then was eliminated in a 5-3 loss to USC Sumter.

"We've set the bar really high here every year," Rhinos coach Shohn Doty said. "That's not going to change. We're going to continue to do what we've done and be a top program in the region. This won't slow us down at all."At the end of the day, 51 wins is a huge accomplishment. We were ranked No. 1 in the country for five or six weeks. So I thought we grew. I thought we got better."I just think we picked a bad day to have a bad day."

Both of the losses came in tournament affected by a turbulent weather pattern that had been in the Columbia, S.C., area for the last few days.
