Honey Hunters get no good news in bankruptcy courtThe NC Gas house Gang LLC, owners of the Honey Hunters, got no good news from Maryland bankruptcy court Judge Lori Simpson last week. Simpson ruled to deny the Honey Hunters request to be admitted back into the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

The court also denied a motion to vacate an order granting the city relief from the automatic stay in the bankruptcy. This allowed Gastonia's lawsuit against the NC Gas House Gang to move forward. After those motions were denied, the Gas House Gang withdrew a motion that sought to have CaroMont Health Park turned over to them, and to be able to hold events there. In December, NC Gas House Gang reported  that they had assets totaling $8,600, and according to court records, millions of dollars in liabilities.

Gastonia firefighters awarded Medal of Valor for rescuing woman from a 175 foot cell towerFirefighter Michael Chafin and Captain Barron Summey with the Gastonia Fire Department were honored earlier this year for their rescue of a woman that was hanging upside down on a cellphone tower.Because of the height, the department's 100 foot ladder would not reach. Both Chafin and Summey ascended the tower, and when they reached the woman, she was upside down. Holding her between the ladder, the tower, and themselves, they were able to use rope rescue techniques to safely get her down. “I don’t think there as a worry that we weren’t going to come off,” Chafin said at a recent Gastonia City Council meeting. “We just tried to get to her as quick as we could to secure her, and luckily we were able to do that by the grace of God.”

Gaston College softball program's historic week continues in DH split with perennial national power

Last Tuesday Gaston College softball continued a historic week in school history with a doubleheader split against national power Louisburg at Gastonia's CaroMont Health Park.

The Rhinos lost 6-4 in 8 innings, then won 11-1 in 6 innings by the 8-run mercy rule in the doubleheader.

It came one day after Gaston College (19-3) received votes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I poll for the first time.

"I think it's kind of that next step for us as a program," Rhinos head coach Mike Steuerwald said. "Louisburg has been kind of the bar in this state for years. For us to get to where we want to be nationally, we've got to continue to do what we did today and win games against teams like Louisburg."

Gaston College pitcher Connor Frail No. 2 Gaston College completes second straight sweep of Frontier Community College

After battling Frontier Community College through 23 innings Saturday and squeezing out two one-run victories, Gaston College created a different narrative for Sunday's conclusion of the weekend series at Sims Legion Park.

The Rhinos wrapped up a four-game sweep with a 7-0 win in the first game and a 14-2 romp in the second game that ended after 4 1/2 innings.

Ranked No. 2 nationally in the first National Junior College Athletic Association Division I poll of the season, Gaston College (20-2) did nothing to harm its lofty standing.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Connor Frail set the tone for Sunday's twinbill by fashioning only the second complete game of the season along with the first shutout of 2024 by a Rhinos hurler - and first in school history since current Elon pitcher Nolan Straniero shutout USC Sumter in the 2023 Region 10 championship tournament last May.

In the second game, the Rhinos took advantage of the Bobcats' spent pitching staff, scoring in every inning and ending the game with an eight-run spree in the bottom of the fourth.
