Mount Holly to install security cameras along greenwayThe Mount Holly City Council has voted to install 5 security cameras along their greenway. This comes after several women reported being followed by a man on the greenway a month or two back.

“Over the last few months, numerous residents have raised questions regarding greenway safety and these concerns were directly voiced at recent City Council meetings,” said Mount Holly City Manager Jonathan Blanton. “As a result, during the annual retreat of the Mount Holly City Council earlier this month, police and parks staff presented a proposal for security surveillance cameras to be installed along the greenway, and the City Council approved the measure.” “The city is committed to ensuring the safety of our users. By adding these additional security mechanisms, the city is confident that we will be able to continue to provide improved connections throughout Mount Holly and that the cameras will complement current security measures that are in place,” he added.

Gaston College softball splits DH with No. 6 Walters State

Nationally sixth-ranked Walters State knocked Gaston College back in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Gastonia's Caromont Health Park.

But to the Rhinos' credit, they regrouped and rebounded to win game two 5-1 and to earn a split of the twinbill after the visiting Senators rolled 10-2 in the opener in six innings.

"It wasn't that we didn't come ready to go in game one, it was an eye opener for the freshmen in our lineup to see the speed of a World Series-caliber team with the pitching and the bats," Gaston College coach Michael Steuerwald said.

"I thought in the second game we adapted to what they did, and our people just played at a quicker pace and higher level. You never want to get run-ruled in a game, so it was really big to come back."

Among those who took their games to a higher level were pitcher Abigail Brewton, outfielder Gabrielle Porterfield and shortstop Dakota Marshall.

Gaston College gets first No. 1 NJCAA ranking

Ever since Gaston College restarted its athletics program in the fall of 2021, it has enjoyed success in all five sports.

On Monday, the Rhinos' baseball program was ranked No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association official poll for the first time.

"I think our kids deserve it," said Gaston College head coach Shohn Doty, whose team is 35-2 overall and 12-0 in Region 10 and has currently won a school-record 26 straight games. "I think we've gone out and proven it."

Gaston College, which never drew a NJCAA official ranking when it had athletics from 1965 to 1972, has now been ranked in the top 10 in baseball in all three seasons since the school restarted athletics.
