Gastonia's Alliance Bank & Trust to mergeGastonia's Alliance Bank & Trust is merging with Tennessee's Commercial Bancgroup of Harrogate. The merger will allow AB&T to begin offering residential mortgages, and will also increase the banks lending limit from $4 million to $50 million.AB&T has two branches in Gastonia, one in Kings Mountain, and one in Shelby. They also have a new office planned in Belmont at 500 Park Street, coming this fall.The merger will not result in any job losses for AB&T, which has about 35 employees.
Kings Mountain seeks to renegotiate with Two Kings Casino, Cleveland CountyThe City of Kings Mountain said in a news release they they receive "zero financial considerations" from an agreement between between the City, Two Kings Casino, and Cleveland County.The city says they are seeking a re-interpretation of their intergovernmental agreement, which would include "amended allocation of 'payments-in-lieu-of-taxes'" from the deal.“It’s as if we’ve sold our city’s future for a bowl of lentil soup,” Kings Mountain Mayor Wagman. “tell me how the city in which the casino resides was either left out of the negotiations, or had poor representation, as the current result shortchanges the City of Kings Mountain in an uncharacteristically lobsided agreement.”“As a Native American myself, I would desire nothing more than to embrace the Catawba Nation and offer City utility services at rates, and under terms more consistent with that which might be extended to the typical new business within the City’s jurisdiction, paying City taxes," said Wagman "However, in the absence of any share in the Payment-in-lieu-of-taxes revenue-stream established by the Intergovernmental Agreement, it would be impossible to view or treat the project as though it were in the City and subject to City taxes."

CLT has opened a new $8 million viewing site, funded by the airport.The site includes a F4 Phantom aircraft which flown Viet Nam and the cold wars, as well as two age specific playgrounds that have an aviation theme. The overlook also features restrooms, a pet relief area, and shaded areas with benches.The new viewing area is located at 5130 Airport Overlook Drive in Charlotte. It just opened, and was pretty crowded yesterday.

Piedmont Lithium leads Charlotte companies in median average payBelmont based Piedmont Lithium leads Charlotte Metro companies in median annual pay for their employees, according to the Charlotte Business Journal. Based on an employee count of 63, the median average salary was $202,043.Piedmont's CEO Keith Phillips compensation was $6.1 million, or about 30 times their average employee. Meanwhile, Piedmont Lithium was trading at over $60 a year ago, as of this post it is trading at $12.13 in after hours trading.
Gastonia getting rid of buses, switching to microtransitThe City of Gastonia is changing from fixed route buses to microtransit vans that work more like Uber or Lyft."We saw a need to provide on-demand microtransit transportation to our residents as our city continues to grow,” said Mayor Richard Franks. "This move away from fixed-route buses will provide cost savings and will increase accessibility for everyone in our community.”City leaders are hoping that this change will address an aging fleet of buses, long wait times, and lack of access to bus stops. The new service will provide curb to curb service.One way fares will increase from $1.25 to $2 for most people, and fares for elderly and disabled passengers will increase from .60 cents to $1. The change goes into effect July 1.

Gastonia Police Capt. Trent Conard saved the life of a child at the Olive Garden in Gastonia.Capt. Conard was at the restaurant on his lunch break when he heard a woman shout, “She’s not breathing, my baby’s not breathing!”Conard rushed over to where the mother and child were in the restaurant. The child had choked and was blue and limp, and people in the restaurant were upset and crying. Conard performed four or five back thrusts, and stopped to monitor the child when she came to, started crying, and suddenly everything was fine again.“That’s what we do as police officers, that’s how we’re trained,” Conard said. “It’s awesome to be able to help someone in their moment of need and save a life.”
