Sno Cap was the best!
It's gone now, but a lot of folks in Mount Holly and surrounding area remember Sno Cap Ice Cream. It was on the corner of East Charlotte Avenue and North Alexander Street. Sno Cap was owned by Betty Jean Gaddy, and before that was owned by her mother, Flora Frances Alexander Gaddy. They both lived in a house next door to the Sno Cap.People fondly remember visiting on Sundays, the milkshakes and lemon ice cream.

Neighbors heard loud explosions during lithium fireGaston County fire crews got a call at 1:20 AM last Monday , with reports that Livent Corporation in Bessemer city was on fire. Livent Livent makes high performance lithium products and solutions.Fire fighters were unable to use water on the fire, as lithium is water reactive...water actually make a lithium fire increase. The decision was made to isolate the fire and let it burn out. The burned lithium left a "lava like product". No one was injured, and all employees are accounted for, and the smoke released was not deemed hazardous. Although neighbors heard explosions during the night, they were not evacuated.According to officials, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the state fire marshal’s office are assisting with the investigation.

Charlotte to get pro baseball? Maybe...In a recent interview Hugh McCall, former CEO of Bank of America, talked pro baseball and Charlotte's chances of getting a team.
“I think that pro baseball requires a big population mass to make it profitable,” McColl told the Charlotte Business Journal recently.. "And whether we have that population, that mass at the moment, I don’t know. I guess one would argue that I've always been in favor of a downtown location. But getting to and from the ballpark every night is a challenge.”
McColl, who is 88, added, “Someone else will have to solve that one. I can’t solve that one.” " “I think that we would be a better town than Nashville. Just being honest, where I think we grow faster, (with a) bigger corporate market. And, you know, we’ve got more big companies for sponsorship, and we are a town that sits on the border of the Carolinas, and we have 10, 11, 12 million people within 50 miles of us.”

What's going in the old Bi-Lo location in Stanley?
Bait shop? Goodwill? Grocery store? Everyone has an opinion it seems.Kyle Pettit seems to have the lowdown, here:
Bi-Lo - just facts...(got bored of the bickering)
Rehold Stanley, LLC owns the Bi-Lo lot [since 2001] with an open Deed of Trust for $4,178,200.95
Rehold Stanley, LLC is a subsidiary of Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize N.V. - a Dutch holding company for grocers & other commerical industries all over the world.
They own brands like 'Stop & Shop' - 'Bi-Lo' [acquired in 1977] - and notably Food Lion [acquired in 1974]. They also own cell towers, development companies, & stuff like that.
The lot that the current Food Lion sits on is owned by Soley Stanley Marketplace, LLC (not a subsidiary of Koninklike) since 2015. Previously owned by IRT Partners, LLC, who gave the lease to Food Lion in 2006.
The lease expires in 2026, but gives FL the option of extending their lease 4 times, for a period of 5 years each time.
In 2020 Koninklijke purchased 62 Bi-Lo stores across the Southeast to convert these into Food Lion stores.
My guess? Food Lion will stand alone in Stanley until at least 2026 - then I'm assuming they'll make use of their larger store space and move over to the Bi-Lo spot. Barring any substantial need for a second grocery store of course. But these companies dont look at how long our lines are, they look at population density.

I didn't even look at records, there are 6 grocers around the Belmont location, including a Wal-Mart & Harris Teeter. Belmont is no Mooresville (where theres a Lowes Foods/Publix/& Harris Teeter all in the same intersection). A grocery store in the spot just wouldn't make sense. [Just like a Goodwill doesn't make sense @ ours]
Is all of this factual? We don't know, but Mr. Pettit sure seems to know what he is talking about.
