Belmont Police launching "At-risk Resident" programBelmont has launched a program to help officers know what they are dealing with when making emergency calls or well checks. Citizens are invited to upload information about themselves or loved ones that have, autism, dementia, health conditions or disabilities. A picture can also be added.“We only have very limited information and we have to make those decisions, very rapidly,” explained Belmont Police Lieutenant Tony Cape. “I think often people forget that law enforcement officers don’t have the luxury of knowing all the things everybody finds out after an incident occurs.” “We get out and we can recognize that that person is in our database, and that person has autism, we might approach that person differently than we would somebody else and we’ll be able to make a little bit better connection because we would know their name, right and that might bring some of their tensions down,” said Cape.More info...

Gastonian Halls event venue now openGastonian Halls event venue is now open in downtown Gastonia at 181 West Main Avenue. The name comes from a old movie theater that was once in Gastonia, the Gastonian Theater."So what we are going to have is probably the number one venue hall in not only Gaston County, but Charlotte too, because it's over 24,000 square feet, Each room is like 5,000 (square feet). So if you want to have 100 people or 500 people, it would accommodate that." said manager Tom McPhaul. The building has a dance floor, a kitchen, a portable bar, and sound and light systems."Our main purpose is to rent the building and furnish the table and chairs, so you can have your own caterers come in, Even though they're large rooms, even when you have a small group, it feels intimate." said McPhaul.

Gaston College baseball ranked # 1 for first time this year

When Shohn Doty became Gaston College's head baseball coach in the summer, he was convinced the school could be successful on a regional and national level.

Based on the Rhinos' success, boy was he ever right.

Not only has Gaston College had an impressive 142-30 record in its three seasons since the school restarted athletics, it has gained national rankings each season capped by the school's historic first No. 1 ranking.

A preseason No. 14 ranking sure seemed low after Gaston College won three of four games against national power (and No. 5-ranked) Walters State in the second weekend of the regular season gave an indication of future success.

By the end of February, the Rhinos were ranked No. 2 nationally in the midst of a school-record 26-game winning streak - and eventually became No. 1 in all national polls.

First ranked in the top spot by Dream Big Athletics on March 11, Gaston College would eventually be ranked No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll on March 25.

The Rhinos would be ranked No. 1 by the NJCAA in four polls, Dream Big Athletics in five polls and 2-Year Baseball in two polls.

Gaston College would eventually finish 51-8 overall, 20-4 in Region 10 and No. 11 in the final poll.

Gaston College softball had a killer season

Gaston College's softball team had high expectations entering the 2024 season after making the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series in 2023.

Despite not getting as far this season, a 49-9 overall record, the school's first mention in the NJCAA poll and another Region 10 regular season title indicated more success for coach Mike Steuerwald's program.

The Rhinos had an 18-2 start that included a 15-game winning streak that garnered votes in the NJCAA poll for the first time on Feb. 26; Gaston College received votes in eight more polls including the final one of the season.

Gaston College then gained national and regional respect by splitting a pair of doubleheaders against Division II national power Louisburg, including an 11-9 come-from-behind road win in eight innings late in the season.

The Rhinos would finish 14-2 to win the Region 10 regular season title before finishing as tourney runner-up to second-place Florence-Darlington Tech; The Stingers had gave Gaston College its only four defeats against Region 10 Division I competition.

Seven Gaston College softball players were honored on the All-Region 10 team - Abigail Brewton (pitcher), Grace Kealy (infield), Gabrielle Porterfield (outfield) and Emma Ghorley (utility) were named to the first team with Skye Harrington (catcher), Alayna Patrick (infield) and Kendall Bradshaw (outfield) named to the second team.

Later, three Rhinos were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) 2024 All-South team - Alayna Patrick (second base) was a first team selection and Abigail Brewton (pitcher) and Grace Kealy (third baseman) were second team selections. And Kealy also was named NFCA All-American as an "At-Large third baseman" second team selection.
