Good morning Gaston County, it's David.Today is July 29th, 2025.

So here we are in the dog days of summer- the hottest part of the year. When I was a kid I don't remember being concerned with the heat...and we stayed out all day riding bikes or playing in the woods. But I do remember summer as the best  part of the year-no school! Nowadays I see kids out and about (if they're not inside on a screen) and think-this is one of the best times of your life-enjoy! And I have to admit,  I'm just a tiny bit jealous.Today's weather:  Humid with times of sun and clouds; a thunderstorm in spots in the afternoon  High of 95.Tonight: An evening thunderstorm in spots; otherwise, partly cloudy and humid. The low will be 73.

County delays decision on Mount Holly developmentThomas Springs and other property owners have been trying for years to get a large development approved and annexed into the City of Mount Holly. The land in question is near Second Baptist Church and the Mount Holly Middle School, and the corner of Rankin and West Catawba. It appears to be the last large track of land near downtown Mt. Holly.Because the land in not in the city limits of Mt Holly, the owner has turned to the county for approval, to effectively bypass the Mt. Holly City Council. But the City has asked the County to deny the request, and so far, the county has delayed the request until October.Evidently a continuing issue is the lower price of the homes planned, and the fact that the tax revenue that would be collected, should the City annex the project, would be insufficient to cover the cost of city services provided.

GASTON COUNTY WANTS RESIDENT INPUT FOR NEW COMPREHENSIVE PLAN FOR UNINCORPORATED AREAS

Gaston County has kicked off a year-long effort to create a new plan for growth and development. Envision Gaston is a community-driven process that will establish a vision for the unincorporated areas of the County, develop a new land use strategy, and create an actionable plan for the future.

The County will seek community feedback throughout the planning process, with the first round of public engagement efforts underway. An online survey and interactive map are available on the project website, www.envisiongaston.com. The community is also encouraged to attend one of three identical community workshops.

What's going to happen to the Armory at 519 West Franklin?Built in the 1930's, the Armory Building at 519 West Franklin is a beautiful example of what I believe to be art deco architecture. But it's future may be in doubt after a recent Gastonia City Council meeting. The issues with the building are access, asbestos, lead paint, and roof damage.

According to the city, the cost to make all the needed repairs and remediation is $2.1 million. It wold cost $325,000 to demolish the building. Other options include turning the building into apartments or offices, which would cost around $12 million.Let's hope they come up with a solution to give the building new life, and save some of our architectural heritage.
