Hornets are often considered pests, as they aggressively guard their nesting sites when threatened and their stings can be more dangerous than those of bees. All North American hornets are related to Yellow Jackets.

Gastonia to get bill payment kiosks
Gastonia has announced that it will set up bill payment kiosks at local supermarkets. The kiosks at the three Food Lion locations can handle cash payments. Customers will need their 8-digit city of Gastonia account number and address to make kiosk payments.Kiosks will be located at:

Drive Though Starbucks coming to DallasA new Starbucks is slated to be built in Dallas in early 2025. Supposedly it will be a free standing store with a drive though. The address listed is 106 College View Drive, whic is, or is adjacent to, the old Dairy Queen.Dallas Mayor Hayley Bailey thinks Starbucks will be good for Dallas. "I've been working closely with Gaston College really in hopes to make Dallas a kind of a college town, but keep it the same, small atmosphere, really homey. But I think that with the Starbucks being here, it's going to generate some revenue," she said. "It'll give the students a place to study. With Gaston Aquatics Center coming, it'll give the parents that are coming to the tournaments a place to venture out. I think it's going to be great. I'm excited about it."
Mount Holly adds cameras to greenwayThe City of Mount Holly has added five cameras to Riverhawk Greenway. This comes after residents reported concerns for their safety on the greenway. The new cameras have a live feed to the city 911 center. Although the cameras are not monitored 24/7, they are motion activated, and can be viewed live or in prerecorded mode.
Cramerton to makes new app available to residentsThe town of Cramerton has a new app online for residents. While still being developed, the new app will allow real time push notifications for power outages, police information, and more.The app should be completed by August, and is free to download.
Gastonia to offer hiring bonuses to SC officers
We told you in April of Gastonia's hiring bonus program to atract experienced police officers to the Gastonia police force. Now the program has been expanded to recruit officers from South Carolina.Since April six positions are being processed, and four lateral hires have already occurred. Officers that qualify for the bonus will receive $7500 upon hire, and $7500 at the end of one year. Current Gastonia police officers can receive a bonus if they recruit another officer, ranging from $1000 to $6000.
19 unit townhome project possibly coming to Bessemer CityCharlotte developer South Oak Partners as asking the Bessemer City to rezone a one acre parcel to accommodate a 19 unit townhome project. The planned townhomes would be 1700 square feet, brick , three story units with rear loaded two car garages. The project would be adjacent to the Lofts at Osage Mill.

The Mount Holly Police Department Kids Camp visited television station WBTV last Thursday. The camp is for kids that have shown leadership skills in the community.The kids got to delver a weather forecast, deliver the news, and spend time with on air talent. This is the second year for the camp.

Gaston County Habitat for Humanity to merge with Charlotte RegionThe board of Habitat Gaston County will merge with the board of Habitat Charlotte Region, effective October 1. They will operate under the Habitat Charlotte Region name.
“The cost of housing in the greater Charlotte area continues to outpace many working families’ ability to purchase homes,” said Habitat Charlotte Region CEO Laura Belcher in a press release. “By consolidating our organizations and combining efforts, we expect to serve more of those families together, more quickly than our two affiliates could serve if we continued to operate independently.”
The new organization will serve families from Charlotte to Gastonia and Pineville to Statesville, and will have:
Assets of nearly $69 million
Revenues of more than $52 million
Nearly 1,100 mortgages
More than 4,500 volunteers contributing nearly 80,000 hours of service annually
More than 230 employees
“More than a third of the Gaston County population is cost-burdened, spending more than 30 percent of their monthly income on housing. We have several families who have already been approved for new home ownership and many more who have requested critical repairs to homes they own,” said Habitat Gaston County Board Chairman Patrick Mumford in a press release. “Combining our talent and resources will enable us to provide services to those families in an accelerated time frame.”
