Good morning Gaston County, it's David.Today is July 22nd, 2025.

Interesting. There is a lot of talk online right now about nicknames or monikers for Gastonia/Gaston County. As you probably know, Gaston Alive tries to promote all the good things about living here.Lake Norman uses LKN, Charlotte, CLT. Through the years I have heard Gas House, G Town, and Little Chicago to describe Gastonia. . Now I see some folks using DTG for downtown Gastonia...which is sort of like NoDa for North Davidson. I like DTG for downtown Gastonia, but we need something else to represent Gastonia and Gaston County. We'll see where this goes.

Photo of Lainey Wells, courtesy of Amanda WootenGaston County Police officer credited with saving baby's lifeDallas resident Amanda Wooten and Thomas Wells were expecting their daughter to be born early in June. Instead, the baby came early, and was born in their bathroom. Unfortunately, they quickly realized something was wrong; the baby was not breathing and turning blue. After the couple called 911, Officer Moe Mahmoud arrived on scene.  “The mom was there. The baby was there. There was also a lot of fluid, blood and other stuff,” the officer said. “I kind of got down in a ball and I held her like that, and I just used my thumbs like that on her chest,” Mahmoud said, demonstrating the infant CPR movements. After a few minutes the infant started to show improvement.  “Given the fact that her color was starting to change back to normal, getting a little more pink and a little bit more movement in her arms and stuff like that ... that reassured me a little bit,” Mahmoud said.Mahmoud visited the family home after they came home from the hospital. “I just wanted to hold her. I don’t know why. I just wanted to hold her,” said Mahmoud. “She’s breathtaking honestly. I’m so thankful that I was there. Now that I see her, I know that we share that history. It’s incredible. Every time I look at her, it’s incredible.”
