Interstate 85 to be widened through Gaston County
The NC DOT is going to widen a 10 mile stretch through Gaston County, and expand from 3 lanes to 4 in both directions.This from the NC DOT:
The Interstate 85 widening project in Gaston County is being built in segments. This project will improve safety and traffic flow on one of the Charlotte-metro’s main arteries. Here’s a look at what’s planned:
Segment A: I-85 will be widened from McAdenville Road (Exit 23) to the U.S. 321 interchange (Exit 17). It also includes intersection improvements at Cox Road and U.S. 29-74/Franklin Boulevard. This segment is scheduled to be let in late 2028.
Segment B: I-85 will be widened from McAdenville Road (Exit 23) to the Catawba River at the Mecklenburg County line. This segment includes intersection improvements at N.C. 7/U.S. 29-74. NCDOT expects to award a contract for this segment soon.
Segment C: Currently in design. A contractor and designer are working on plans for three railroad bridges and one roadway bridge throughout Segment A. Railroad coordination, design and permitting takes time, so these structures have been separated from the rest of Segment A.
Does anybody go to the bank anymore?Wells Fargo is closing their branch in Dallas at 1019 Dallas-Cherryville Highway. They say it's because more folks are banking online. After the Dallas location closes, the nearest Wells Fargo will be at 403 Cox Road in Gastonia. And actually, that location no longer has their drive up windows open...ATM or inside banking only.
Good news for Bessemer CityChinese Company Healsee Capsules has bought the former Hunter Douglas facility in Bessemer City for $20 million. They will make a $56 million dollar investment, and create 175 jobs. The jobs will pay slightly above the Gaston County average at $52,354.
Gaston County, Belmont, in the running for project DoveThe Gaston County Commissioners have approved an incentives grant for Project Dove. The codenamed project would create 386 jobs at an average annual wage of $60,211, which is above the Gaston County average. It would also involve an $80 million dollar investment in an existing building in Belmont.Project Dove is part of the pharmaceutical industry. Gaston County is competing with another state for the project.
Casa Azul Mexican Kitchen close, still no cigarCasa Azu Mexican Kitchen had hoped to open by mid June.Inspections are expected to take another 2-3 weeks, according to owner Angel Zaragoza.Casa Azul Gastonia will be located in the old Hooters location on East Franklin Blvd. in Gastonia.

Savory Calle coming to downtown GastoniaA new bar called Savory Calle is coming to downtown Gastonia. According to owner Arturo Perez the new venue will have a Latin theme, and play Latin music. Affordable housing project complete in GastoniaFairhaven Place, an affordable housing project in Gastonia has been completed, and is already 70% full.Located on East Hudson Blvd., the complex includes 200 1,2, and 3 bedroom apartments. Community amenities include a community room, exercise room, business center, playgrounds, and a community garden.
Affordable housing generally refers to housing that costs no more that 30% of a households gross income including utilities.
This guideline aims to ensure that families can afford other essential living expenses like food, transportation, and healthcare.
