Partial Animal Shelter Closure
Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement would like to request help from the community. The animal shelter has confirmed positive cases of Feline Panleukopenia in our cat population and Canine Parvovirus in the dog population. At this point, the spread of these viruses are isolated to certain areas of the shelter. However, these viruses are highly contagious. The suggested protocol to control the spread of these viruses inside the shelter, is for Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement to partially suspend animal intake at the shelter.
During this period, our exposed cat and dog populations will be isolated and monitored closely for any clinical signs of the virus. The shelter remains open to the public for adoptions of our healthy animals. We anticipate that the shelter will resume animal intakes for both dogs and cats on August 1, 2022.
Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement appreciates your assistance and understanding. We apologize for any inconveniences this places on our community. We look forward to returning to normal operations. Please refer to our social media sites or contact us at the shelter (704-922-8677) for more information. More

Mount Holly's police chief calling it quits after 35 yearsMount Holly's Don Roper will step down at the end of July, after 35 years of policing in Gaston County. Roper was a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2019.
“I want to thank Chief Roper for his many years of dedicated service to the City of Mount Holly,” said City Manager Miles Braswell in a press release. “The MHPD and the City as a whole have benefited tremendously with Chief in charge. He has worked tirelessly to consider others above himself and has made Mount Holly a safer place. His dedication to the police profession shows in the way he conducts himself, and this is reflective in the professional manner portrayed by the MHPD.”
