Savory Calle now open
As we told you last week, Savory Calle is now open at 223 East Main Avenue in Gastonia, next to Wild &Whimsy.They currently have a takeout window for lunch and dinner, with bar service after hours.

What's up with Olde Mecklenburg Brewery Mount Holly?Olde Mecklenburg Brewery is still coming to Mount Holly, according to Jim Birch, COO of OMB.They are currently going through a re-pricing exercise with several contractors, and hope to have shovels in the ground in the fall. According to Birch, they are a bit behind schedule but still very much committed to the project.
Daimler Truck to lay off 573 workers in Mount HollyNot good news, but it seems like the circle of life...Daimler Truck has sent a letter to the state of NC, stating that 573 workers in Mount Holly will be affected by a "temporary layoff". The furloughed workers will be paid through September 9th.
"As we navigate a challenging economic environment, we’ve seen a notable slowdown in new truck orders, particularly in our medium-duty, on-highway, and electric vehicle segments,” the company said in a statement. “To align with current market conditions, we’ve made the tough decision to implement workforce reductions across several facilities.”The facility at 1400 Tulip Drive in Gastonia will also see layoffs.

A new local non-profit called From Hearts to Homes Carolinas is furnishing homes with furniture and more. Beginning in early 2024,local Realtor Jeannine Beert started From Hearts to Homes Carolinas, which distributes furniture and home essentials to people emerging from homelessness. They now partner with 18 community organizations across Gaston County, and have helped over 125 families.
The nonprofit’s mission is clear: “To provide the essential furniture and home accessories needed for a fresh start.” Currently they have furniture stored in multiple locations, and they hope to be able to consolidate to a central location. They are currently applying for grants.
