Coolio! Gaston Regional Aquatic Center to break ground in AugustIt looks like Gaston County will be getting Aquatic Center, to be built in Dallas.This project has been almost 30 years in the planning, and was put on hold due to Covid. The facility will actually include two pools, and offer much more that competitive swimming only.The project is quite a coup for Dallas and Gaston County in general, as swimmers and their families will need hotels, restaurants, and other amenities as they attend swim meets. The project is the result of collaboration of private and corporate sponsors, Gaston County, the City of Dallas, and North Carolina State grants.The Aquatic Center will be built behind Ingles and Carr Elementary in Dallas on Carpenter Street, which will be extended.Way to go Gaston Aquatics!www.gastonaquatics.org

Seelinger named new Belmont MayorMarc Seelinger Jr. has been named as the new Mayor of Belmont. Seelinger takes the place of former Mayor Charlie Martin,who recently resigned due to heath concerns. Seelinger is not expected to seek reelection to the Belmont City Council, but is focused on running for County Commissioner.Jason Rumfelt was voted in unanimously to fill Seelinger's open seat. Rumfelt is also expected to run for County Commissioner.
UNC Chapel Hill And Duke University to offer free tuition to someIn response to the recent Supreme Court Ruling regarding affirmative action, UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University will offer free tuition to some students.Beginning in 2024, UNC Chapel Hill will offer free tuition and requited fees for students whose families make less than $80 thousand per year.Duke University announce3d in June that they would provide full tuition for students from North and South Carolina whose students male less that $150,000 per year. And for students from the Carolinas whose families earn below $65,000, Duke will provide full tuition grants, plus assistance for housing, meals and other campus expenses.
