Possible Superfund site to be developed just outside Mount Holly
Evidently a site either owned currently or in the past by Martin-Marietta, Sodyeco, a Superfund site, is being considered for redevelopment. The site is in Mecklenburg County, just across the Catawba River from Mount Holly. (See EPA study here...)
The site was owned by the Reventure Park, and sold to Long Branch Development. (Address is 11920 Mount Holly Rd), and has
approximately 102 acres located on northside of Mount Holly Road. The proposed development will contain up to 810 dwelling units, including multi family, duplexes, triplexes, quadruplexes and single-family detached homes. This project also includes a stoplight at Belmeade(
Mecklenburg County Rezoning Petition 2021-215)Supposedly the builder is going to remediate the site. Long time local residents are surprised to see this project come to fruition, because many homes and businesses were demolished in the early 80's due to the pollution.Residents are concerned that dyes and chemicals will be unearthed during construction.

From our friend Matthew Haskett: "On January first 2023 CSX B669, the train everyone was out for today rolls through Stanley on it's way to Wadeboro with a trio of CN's leading. It makes this scene look like some small Canadian town instead of Stanley with some Christmas decorations still up after the new year."Matthew tells us that
CN stands for Canadian National... a railroad in Canada. Canadian power is typically not used on the CSX through Stanley.Cool beans!

Gastonia church wondering what's next after holiday fireChurch gets offers from local congregations...The Place church at 4007 York Highway in south Gastonia caught fire about 3:05 PM on Christmas eve, not long after services had ended. The City Fire Marshall said it could be days or week before the cause of the fire could be determined. The church burned to the ground and is a total loss. Church Pastor Ron Duncan says he has had many offers from local churches for a temporary home as The Place considers their next steps. “There have been many,” said Duncan of the response. “I mean an overflow of support from far and near.”

Study says Armstrong Ford Dam can be removedCramerton, Belmont, Gaston County and the Catawba Riverkeeper recently funded a study to determine if all or a portion the Armstrong Ford Dam can be removed. It is hoped that the removal of the dam would remediate flooding in Cramerton and McAdenville. The study looked at sediment analysis, as well as how a downstream bridge would be affected, and how the river would be affected by effluent from a wastewater treatment plant. The results were that the removal is feasible, and would result in flood mitigation and improved river health.
Ending soon!

Bucs beat Panthers 30-24Panthers looked pretty good all day- but Tom Brady too much...Despite two turnovers, Sam Darnold had his best game of the season. He threw for a career high 341 yards and 3 touchdowns. But whatever Darnold did, Brady did better. Brady ended the day with 432 yards. The Good: Sam Darnold. Receiver DJ Moore had 6 catches for 117 yards and a score. The bad: CJ Henderson...allowed the Bucs Mike Evans to score two touchdowns, one for 57 yards and the other for 30. Henderson avoided reporters after the game. Fellow starting corner Keith Taylor Jr. allowed Evans another touchdown, and admitted " “He [Evans] just got me,he said, “I mean, he just got me—straight up.”Coach Wilks only played 35 year old defensive back Josh Norman for 10 or 78 defensive snaps, saying "he didn't want to to put him (Norman) in that situation." But I don't see how it could have been any worse; Carolina's defensive backs were getting torched.
