Painted Tree Boutique comes to GastoniaWe were early to the movies the other night, and my wife wanted to go in something called the Painted Tree Boutique. My heart sank, because I didn't want to be late for the movie, and also because I was pretty sure that this was another junk/antiques(?) place that had taken over an old retail space. Boy was I wrong.First of all, the place is bright and clean. There are individual stall or spaces, but they are all nice. I didn't see used anything. No used clothes, books, magazines, shoes , or electronics. There are several boutiques, socks, candles, housewares, earrings, home decor, and much more. So a big variety.Evidently this is the 31st Painted Tree Boutique. Some vendors are in multiple stores, and the booth owners don't have to be present. I was there on a weekday morning and it was hopping.The New Painted Tree Boutique is at 3704 East Franklin Boulevard, down from Books A Million.

Caldwell Banker Commercial MECA, moving, changing nameBased in Charlotte, Caldwell Banker Commercial MECA is dropping their affiliation with Caldwell Banker, and also relocating two of it''s three regional locations.Rob Pressley, MECA president and CEO, says they will rebrand as MECA Commercial Real Estate. MECA's Gaston County team has moved from Belmont to a temporary space in McAdenville, until their new space in the Dynamo 31 building is complete.
Dallas man can't sleep after winning $250,000
Paul Cobler Jr. of Dallas said he could hardly sleep after winning $250k on a Mega Bucks scratch off ticket.Cobler went to lottery headquarters Monday and collected $178,126 after taxes. He said he plans to pay off his house and his car, and save for retirement.
More drama at Kings Mountain Casino, reporter banned from Tribal LandsCasino is great entertainment, even if you don't gambleSo last month a notice of violation was issued to the Catawba Indian Nation and Two Kings Casino partners for expanding the casino without an approved management contract. “We issued a Notice of Violation to both enforce regulatory compliance and ensure the Nation is the primary beneficiary of its gaming revenue,” the commission said in a statement at the time.Penalties included possible temporary closure,and/or a $57,000 daily fine.Last weekend, a reporter for the Post and Courier, Maggie Brown Driggers, was removed from a meeting at the Catawba Nation in Rock Hill and cited for trespassing. She was evidently working on a story about the Catawba Nation cutting ties with Kings Mountain Sky Boat Partners when she attended the meeting, although her request for an invitation had been rejected. She has since been banned from Tribal Lands.

Dumb crook storyDon't know if this is funny, or just sad...We don't usually feature crime in the GA newsletter, but we'll make an exception for a dumb crook story.Evidently a woman wearing a black face mask carrying a gun entered a store on South York Road in Gastonia in late October. The bandit demanded cash and struck an employee in the head with her gun. During the assault however, the bandit's mask fell off, and she was immediately recognized as ex-employee Natasha Otero. Otero then fled the store leaving her mask and gun behind.Police obtained a warrant, and Otero was arrested on December 27.
Ground broken on Charlotte's first medical schoolGot big plans for your kid to go to medical school? Maybe they can stay close to home...Charlotte leaders and officials gathered to shovel some dirt in the beginning of a project they are calling "The Pearl". The Pearl will be Charlotte's first four year med school, as well as a nursing school, retail, apartments, a hotel, and open community spaces.No timeline was announced on the $1.5 billion dollar project.
First rabies case of 2023Gaston County Animal Care & Control has reported the first case of rabies in Gaston County in 2023. The raccoon was recovered from Lakeview Drive in Belmont, and a specimen was went to the North Carolina State Lab.Animal Control stresses the need for families to have all of their pets vaccinated against rabies , not only to prevent household pets from contracting the disease, but to control the spread.
