Gaston College could have 2 former players in Major League draft
Only one player, pitcher Alan Lindsay, has ever been drafted by the a major league team in Gaston College's baseball history. Lindsay, a 1969 Cherryville High graduate was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth round of the 1970 major league draft. But that could soon change.

Derek Vartanian now plays for Campbell University, but for the Rhinos, Vartanian was an All-Region 10 pitcher on the school's National Junior College Athletic Association World Series team with a 9-1 record with two saves, 3.08 ERA and 76 strikeouts and nine walks in 76 innings."Last year, he had some insane strikeout to walk ratio. So he's a really good strike-thrower and the velocity has continued to tick up. He's up to 97-98 mph. He's super athletic and has put on some good weight and strength and developed some secondary pitches." said Justin Haire, Campbell University Head Coach. "He could be even higher than a fifth-round pick. He could develop into a first day type of guy."

Like Derek Vartanian, Tyler Chandler Riley now plays at Campbell University.
Riley, a 2020 Concord Cox Mill graduate, started his career at UNC Charlotte before the 6-foot, 190-pounder joined Gaston College's startup program in the fall of 2021 and became one of the school's first collegiate signees with Campbell in the fall of 2021.
For the Rhinos, Riley was an All-Region 10 selection after hitting .382 with a team-high 21 doubles in addition to seven home runs and 43 RBIs Last year at Campbell, he hit .309 with four home runs and 25 RBIs.

FLOOR PLANS FINALIZED FOR UPCOMING STEAKHOUSE
Floor plans for the upcoming Five Spur Steakhouse in neighboring Cherryville, North Carolina were finalized this past Thursday.
Located just a stone's throw from Lawndale, the building will be completely remodeled with seating, imagery, and an atmosphere unique to 5 Spurs but somewhat familiar to those who enjoy dining at Johnny Ray’s Smokehouse and Hoot Nannie.
Cleveland County residents who have long pined for a local steakhouse will soon have a nearby option for heavy hitting flame grilled steaks, chops, and other scratch made, locally sourced staples.
Although an opening date has yet to be set, the finalization of a floor plan puts 5 Spur Steakhouse one step closer to opening.

Belmont mulls partnering for new fire station in North BelmontBelmont has grown by 52% since 2010, so has the need for fire service. As it turns out, the ideal place for a new fire station is right next to a volunteer station that sits just outside of the city limits in North Belmont.Could the stations co-exist? “That may be a consideration,” explained NCFCC’s Greg Grayson, a retired Greensboro fire chief himself. “Sits here an opportunity to potentially partner or work with them somehow. … This is where the modeling says Belmont would build another station.” It is possible that a collaborative effort between the City of Belmont, Gaston County Government and the Community Fire Department could produce a “win-win” arrangement for all parties

Faith Hope & Love Ministries back in the newsGastonia Fire Marshal Chris Stowe says he has received anonymous tip that Pastor Moses Colbet was planning on opening a cold weather emergency shelter. So Chief Stowe sent the pastor a letter warning of possible fines, should the pastor have beds or cots in his facility.“I told him you can bring [people] in, you can put them in pews. You can do church activities and keep them out of the cold,” Stowe said. “What you can’t do because of the North Carolina Fire Code and the North Carolina Building Code is housing them in your church, have beds and cots and things like that and the reason is, is because Section 319 in the North Carolina Fire Code.” When it's cold, Pastor Colbert waits in a van outside the Salvation Army at 6 AM, when the homeless have to leave the Salvation Army building. “[Salvation Army] should never put them out in the cold in no 20-degree weather. They are the ones getting all the resources,” Colbert said. “They’re the ones that are getting funded. We’re not getting funded, and they made sure that we wouldn’t get funded. So, they should have a moral obligation to these people and they’re not doing it. The city has an obligation to these people and they’re not stepping up and doing it.”
