Looks like we are getting a new baseball team!The City of Gastonia has scheduled a news conference for tomorrow, ostensibly to announce a new baseball team for the FUSE Stadium at CaroMont Health Park.“We have always maintained that we would field a team in Gastonia in 2024.” said a city spokesman. Hopefully the new team will have a more appropriate regional name.

Gray Layton Kersh Solomon Furr & Smith PA made the list of the largest Charlotte Metro law firms in a recent edition of the Charlotte Business Journal. They were the only firm on the list not actually headquartered in Charlotte.

People keep asking us about Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and their plans for a new location in Mount Holly. We spoke this week with CEO Jim Birch, and he says they are about 18 months out, as far as a new facility. They hope to be able to share renderings of the new facility around September. They have demolished the old water treatment plant, as it was not usable, and bought the property in front of their property for use as a parking lot. Stay tuned...

The Community Foundation Run is an annual fundraising event for local nonprofits facilitated by the Foundation. On the day of the Run, thousands of people come together for one of the biggest celebrations of community spirit and support in Gaston County.The Community Foundation is one of the very best things about Gaston County. $27,082,711 has been raised since the Run began in 2003. Since that time, the Community Foundation has contributed over $3,848,000 to the Match Fund that supports all participating nonprofit organizations. Gaston Rhino's come out on top!
A matchup of two of the country's top junior college baseball lived up to the advance billing on a sun-splashed Friday at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park as No. 14 Gaston College swept a doubleheader over No. 5 Walters State by 3-1 and 3-2 scores.
"I'll really happy with what we were able to do against a really good team," said Gaston College head coach Shohn Doty, whose Rhinos complete the four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Walters State on Saturday.
In Friday's doubleheader sweep, Gaston College (5-0) was flawless defensively and got solid efforts from each of the seven pitchers it used while taking advantage of eight hits, eight walks and two hit batters to produce six runs.

Gaston College splits a double header
A challenging early season weekend series against two of the top teams in Region 17 that Gaston College's Region 10 will be paired with later this spring in National Junior College Athletic Association district playoff action has to be considered a success for the Rhinos.
For the second straight day, Gaston College split a doubleheader against a Region 17 power with a win in the second game after an opening game defeat.
Gaston College, which advanced to the 2023 NJCAA World Series, split its doubleheader at fellow World Series competitor Gordon State on Friday. Gordon State defeated Georgia Military to win the 2023 Region 17 title.
In Saturday's contests, the Rhinos rallied from an early 4-0 deficit in the opener but couldn't get closer than two runs before scoring the first four runs in the nightcap and relying on unbeaten pitcher Abigail Brewton to gain the split.
