What about parking behind Elevation Church in Belmont?Folks were upset that the lot was closedSo pretty much everything we told you last week about the lot behind Elevation was wrong.The lot was not being paved, only striped. And the City does not own that property. Elevation owns a small section behind their building, and Belmont Land and Development owns the rest. The lot now has approximatley 60 more spots than previously for parking. This was done at no expense to taxpayers, and  is a great example of a public private partnership doing something good for the community.

18-2 Gaston College girl's softball hosts #1 Louisburg College this afternoon

Want to watch some top flight softball? The Gaston College girl's softball Rhinos host #1 ranked Lousiburg College this afternoon at 2 PM at  CaroMont Field in Gastonia.

Louisburg head coach "Eric (Lee) and Louisburg have a great club and a great program," Gaston College coach Mike Steuerwald said. "They haven't lost very many games the last few years so it's a good challenge for our team."

Louisburg has won five straight Region 10 titles - as a Division I member in 2018 and as a Division II member in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023 - and was No. 1 in the preseason poll after finishing fourth in the Division II World Series in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Hurricanes, a longtime power in softball, have a 250-41 record in Lee's seven-year tenure as head coach that includes 9-1 so far this season.

"Even though they are a D2 opponent, everyone in D1 knows how good they are," Steuerwald said of Louisburg. "They've played some of the top teams in D1 and beaten them or been right there with them."For us, it's a really good barometer to see where we are with the program that's been the best in the state in the last several years. They have some D1 players up and down their lineup so it'll be good to see how we compete with them."

The Rhinos (18-2) have won their last 15 games behind a dominant 1-2 pitching staff of Abigail Brewton (10-0 record, 0.64 ERA with two no-hitters) and Abigail Gawlinski (8-2 record, 2.32 ERA) and a balanced offense.

Gastonia officially hands over CaroMont Health Park to the Gastonia Baseball ClubThe City of Gastonia has approved an Exclusive Use Area Lease Agreement for 2984 square feet in the FUSE Stadium.The agreement is for 15 years, at $35,808 per year. The stadium has to be turned over to the Zawyer Group no later than March 15th. The Zawyer Group  will be allowed to make up to $25,000 worth of non-structural renovations without Council approval in the area leased (painting, decorating, etc.)

Area colleges make list of large endowments

Several local colleges make the list of list of the largest endowments, with Davidson College leading the way.  Davidson hadan endowment balance of $1.316,042,085 or $682,949 per undergrad. Belmont Abbey endowment assets at the end of 2022 were $12,195,801, or $8,268 per undergrad.Queen's University 's endowment was $153,518,984 in 2022, down from  $185 million. With 1317 undergraduates, that is approximately $116 thousand per student.

Crescent Communities considering Gaston County siteThe Gaston County Board of Commissioners is set to consider incentives tonight for a  Crescent Communities proposed industrial building. The 184,600 square foot building will be located off of Industrial Pike Road in Gastonia, and should be competed by August 31, 2025.

Meritage Home gets approval to build 500 homes in GastoniaMeritage Homes has gotten approval from the Gastonia City Council to build up to 526 homes on a 219 acre site at  637New Hope Road in Gastonia. The project is to be called Union Mill.

Gaston College's softball winning streak increased to 15 games with a doubleheader sweep over Monroe, N.Y., on Friday afternoon at Gastonia's CaroMont Health Park.

The Rhinos (18-2) won 9-1 in the opener and 15-1 in the nightcap of a pair of game stopped by the mercy rule after five innings.

The sweep came against a Mustangs' team that pushed Gaston College last May in the Region 10 championship tournament; The Rhinos won a pair of 2-0 games to advance to National Junior College Athletic Association district play a year ago.

This time, two huge innings made for comfortable victories in each contest as Gaston College battered Mustangs' ace pitcher Sarah Wall in the opener with an eight-run second inning and erupted for nine runs in the first inning of the nightcap.

Nationally-ranked Gaston College wins sixth straight victory on Saturday afternoon Nationally ranked Gaston College used a workmanlike effort to take it's sixth straight victory  with a 13-3 win over Pro5 Academy on a blustery  Saturday afternoon at Gastona's Sims Legion park.The Rhinos (15-2), ranked No. 14 in the National Junior College Athletic Association preseason poll and as high as No. 3 in a poll earlier this week, took an early lead and trailed 2-1 after 3 1/2 innings before erupting for five runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and five in the sixth to help end the game by the 10-run mercy rule.
