League and City move forward while litigation is pendingThe City of Gastonia and the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball are moving ahead, in spite of pending litigation from the NC Gas House Gang. Zawyer Sports and Entertainment was announced as the new team owners in a press conference last week. They plan to call the team The Gastonia Baseball Club, at least for the first year.The Zawyer Group has pledged to pay any monies owed to former employees, vendors, and others owed by the former owners, NC Gas House Gang.Recently the Gas House Gang filed complaints in Maryland against both the City and the Atlantic League. They allege a scheme by the two parties to eject the team from the stadium and the league without compensation.Attorneys for the Gas House Gang have called the City's announcement of a new team "reckless" in light of the pending litigation. They also accuse the League of wanting to be paid twice for the Gastonia franchise.
Piedmont Lithium lays off 16 employees as lithium prices dropBelmont's Piedmont Lithium has laid off 27% of their workforce, as lithium prices have sagged.Piedmont Lithium stated that it "is managing the pace of development and capital spending" at its U.S. projects. This applies to their ongoing project ion Gaston County, which is undergoing the permitting process. Cost-control measures at the U.S. projects include "deferrals of property purchases, engineering expenses, and other development costs."Piedmont Lithium has been working towards a state mining permit for two years, and they have said recently that they expect a decision "in the coming weeks".

Former Abbey Court apartments sold for $23.1 millionThe Former Abbey Court Apartments, now called the Residences at Belmont, have been sold for $23.1 million by URS Capital Partners.The former owner bought the apartments in 2018 for $16.7 million. The apartments were built in stages in 1988 and 1996. The apartments are located less than a mile from Belmont Abbey College.

Gastonia dad wins $250,000 in lotteryGastonia dad Joshua Ramsey won $250,0000 last week with a 20X The Cash $5 ticket. After taxes he collected $178,751.“This is life-changing for us,” Joshua Ramsey said. “I’m going to buy my family a home,
I started shaking all over,” he recalled. “It’s one of those experiences you’ll never forget.”
He called his son and his sister after the win, “They were both just over the moon ecstatic,” Ramsey said.

More strange noises alarm residents in Gaston CountyLast week, Belmont residents reported hearing some type of loud, overnight noises. Soon they were contacting local television stations, and chatting about it online. Turns out they were not imagined, but real. The noises were the result of American Airlines testing a Boeing 777 on on an Aviation Department-approved runway location, in compliance with airport policy.The airport said in a statement that they regret disrupting any of their neighbors.

New Kimbrell Fiber Innovation Center getting ready for studentsAnew 39,000 square foot building in Belmont is finished, and school officials say equipment will be moved in over the next several months. The new Kimbrell Fiber Innovation Center is located adjacent to Harney Hall on Highway 74 in Belmont.“There’s been a very big change on how we view our textiles and how we make our textiles. That’s what the fiber innovation center’s main target is as far as the way we support the industry," Stephen Sharp, the vice president of fiber innovation and facilities development, said. "So, we’ll have equipment here and we’ll have technology here that we will learn new ways to make textiles from molecule to fabric."Officials plan to open the building this fall.

Gaston College beach volleyball season begins todayAfter setting history for the school and the program last spring, Gaston College's beach volleyball team opens its 2024 season with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at St. Andrews.Coach Rachel Noreika's team last spring became the school's first-ever National Junior College Athletic Association national championship tournament participant when they finished 10th in the inaugural beach volleyball championship tournament in Tavares, Fla.
This season, seven returning players - all with winning experience from a year ago - give the Rhinos hope for even more improvement after they went 7-24 against a challenging schedule a year ago that included matchups with NCAA Division I and Division II four-year schools.After Tuesday's opener, the Rhinos' next matches open their Region 10 slate at Richard Bland on Feb. 23. Home regular season dates are March 4, 13, 15, 16 and April 17 and the Region 10 championships are April 20.

Gaston Rhinos girls softball team has record day
A double shutout capped by a history-making perfect game sparked Gaston College to a doubleheader sweep of Fayetteville Tech on Saturday at Gastonia's CaroMont Health Park.
With sophomore Abigail Gawlinski firing a four-hitter, the Rhinos won 9-0 in five innings in the opener before freshman Abigal Brewton pitched the school's first perfect game in a 12-0, five-inning victory in the nightcap.

Local coach reaches milestoneWhen Gaston College restarted its athletic program in the fall of 2021, there was no guarantee of future success.
However, the Rhinos' baseball program has defied convention with extraordinary success from the start.
On Saturday, head coach and athletic director Shohn Doty guided the Rhinos guided the program to a doubleheader sweep of Cleveland Community College - and a coaching milestone.
In two full seasons and 10 games into the ongoing 2024 season, Doty has guided the Rhinos to a 100-23 record.
