GASTON COUNTY, CITY OF GASTONIA TO OPERATE WARMING CENTER AT GASTONIA FARMER’S MARKET

Continuing a partnership that started three years ago, the City of Gastonia and Gaston County are operating a warming center at the Gastonia Farmer’s Market, 410 E. Long Ave., in Gastonia.

The warming center will be open on nights where the temperature is projected to hit or drop below 32 degrees. It will open at 8 p.m. and remain open until 6 a.m. the following morning.

The City and County – in collaboration with the United Way of Gaston County and multiple faith-based community partners -- are providing the resources for the shelter. This includes volunteer staffing and law enforcement officers to provide security for guests and volunteers. This is a low-barrier facility, meaning it is open to all, and guests will not be required to provide proof of identification.

Temperatures are expected to hit freezing later this week, so the facility will open beginning Friday, November 29, barring a drastic change in the expected weather pattern.

The warming center replaces the Cold Weather Shelter, which was operated by the City and County at the Salvation Army’s Center of Hope Shelter. That facility ceased shelter operations earlier this year.

Mitchell High School Class of 2025Gaston County Schools launches ‘Nickels for Neighbors’

Students in Gaston County Schools are collecting nickels (pennies, dimes, quarters, and dollars, too) to raise money for people affected by Hurricane Helene.  Through the school district’s “Nickels for Neighbors” campaign, the goal is to donate $25,000 (the equivalent of 500,000 nickels) to Mitchell County Schools.December 3-4 are designated as collection days for all 56 schools, and students and staff are encouraged to bring in spare change to support the fundraising effort.  Any amount – big or small – is welcome, according to Dr. Rebecca Huffstetler, principal of East Gaston High School and chairman of the Principals Leadership Team, which is spearheading the effort. The money will be donated to support students in the Class of 2025 at Mitchell High School and Mayland Early College High School in Mitchell County, an area that was hard-hit by the hurricane.  The idea is to aid students with the purchase of caps and gowns, yearbooks, and other items and support graduation-related activities to ensure their senior year is as enjoyable as possible, given the circumstances that many families have faced since the storm caused widespread damage in September across western North Carolina.Students and staff are encouraged to make their donation to the “Nickels for Neighbors” campaign on December 3-4 (the collection day for some schools may vary).  Parents wishing to donate should contact the school office for information.

Gastonia's Salvation Army homeless shelter closed in August due to fundingJohn Mills has worked for the Salvation  Army for six years, and leads social services for the local chapter. The shelter in downtown Gastonia closed in August due to funding issues. About 30 people were affected."[The Department of Social Services] really became involved as far as through their ERAP program, emergency rental assistance program -- 95% were able to get ERAP funding and they transitioned to permanent housing," Mills said. "The 5% or the 10%, they moved on to other housing options or reunification with their families.”“There is no other shelter here," Mills said. "The closest one at this point would be Hesed House in Lincolnton. That’s a good run, so you always worry.”

Gaston County elected officials sworn in

On Monday, December 2, the Gaston County Board of Commissioners seated its new members during an invocation ceremony that also included the Gaston County School Board, the Register of Deeds, Soil and Water Conservation District Board and judicial officials.

Republican Cherryville Township Commissioner Alan Fraley and Republican Crowders Mountain Township Commissioner Bob Hovis were re-elected to their respective seats; Hovis for a third term and Fraley for his sixth. Also seated were new commissioners Jim Bailey (R-South Point Township) and Scott Shehan (R-Gastonia Township).

The invocation ceremony also saw the swearing in of new Republican Register of Deeds Jonathan Fletcher, who replaced the retiring Susan Lockridge. It also included the swearing in of the Gaston County Board of Education, which includes one new member – Janna Smith – as well as the swearing in of Lee McConnell to the Soil and Water Conservation District.

Following the invocation, the Board of Commissioners held its annual organizational meeting, where Commissioner Chad Brown (R-Riverbend Township) was unanimously selected to serve as the board’s chairman for the fourth consecutive year. The Board also selected Cathy Cloninger (R-Gastonia Township) as vice chairman. It is the first time on board leadership for Cloninger, who is entering the third year of her first term.

Gaston College rallies for road win that sets modern school record winning streak

by Richard Walker

Gaston College's second half rally on Saturday that resulted in a 77-64 basketball win at Patrick & Henry Community College also gave the Rhinos their longest winning streak in modern school history at eight games.

Previously, Gaston College had won its first six games in the Rhinos' inaugural season of 2021-22 and the first seven games of the 2022-23 season.

In the school's earlier athletics history from 1965 to 1972, three Gaston College teams won 10 or more games in a row; The 1969-70 team won a record 17 straight, 1971-72 team won 14 straight and the 1966-67 team won its first 14 games.

"That's fantastic," first-year Rhinos coach Benny Moss said of the historic winning streak. "But we're focused on one game at a time. And this team is really buying into that. They're talking about going 1-0 today."

On Saturday, Gaston College improved to 8-1 on the season with its second-largest rally of the season.

Trailing 44-35 with 17:42 to play, the Rhinos closed the game on a 42-20 surge that included 20-8 in the final 6 1/2 minutes.

"Our depth is critical for us," Moss said. "We played 12 guys today and when we do what we're supposed to, we can wear teams down."
