Bill decides land dispute between Catawba and Cherokee Indians
The Catawba Two Kings Casino operates on land that was claimed by both the Catawba and Cherokee Indians nations. The dispute appears to have been settled by an act of Congress, giving the land to the Catawbas. This allows the Catawbas to continue operating their Catawba Two Kings Casino there.The bill is a win for the Catawba tribe but isn’t very different from where things currently stand. The U.S. Department of Interior announced last year that it found that the Catawba tribe stretched into six counties in North Carolina and placed the land in Cleveland County into a trust for the Catawbas.
Funeral for Officer Mia GoodwinOfficer Mia Goodwin of Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department was killed December 22 in a wreck involving two semi-trucks. Goodwin had just returned to active duty from maternity leave.Funeral services will be held tomorrow at First Baptist Church at 301 South Davidson Street in Charlotte. Visitation is set for 10 and 12 AM. The public is invited to the funeral, but the burial is private.
New Ice Trail
The Whitewater Center’s ice rink has grown to over 24,000 sq. ft. this year and includes four distinct skating areas, including two ice trails and two free skate zones. The new trail addition extends access further into the Upper Pond towards the pump house and provides a brand new experience for guests.
Centered in the converted pond is an on-ice Airstream serving hot and cold beverages when guests need a skate break. Info..

Lowell plans new park, public works facility on former textile siteThe city of Lowell is planning a new public works facility and park on the grounds of a former textile dying site. The site, located at 1602 North Main Street, has more than 17 acres and is located near the South Fork River.The planned park could include an amphitheater, a volleyball court, picnic shelters, a connection to the Carolina Thread Trail, and a playground.The site may require some environmental remediation, and is likely to be completed in phases over several years.
