Happy strange week between Christmas and New Year's  Gaston County! It's David, and today is December 27, 2022.In Britain this week is called Boxing Week. A decade ago the retail industry coined the name to extend the British notion of giving servants the day off along with a small present in a box. Nothing to do with Evander Holyfield.

Today's weather:Today there will be sunny to partly cloudy, with  a high of 47.Tonight will be clear and cold, with a low of 23.

Duke Energy asks for continued energy conservation as power restoration continues following extreme winter temperatures

Duke Energy asked customers to conserve energy usage as crews restored power following rotating outages in the Carolinas in response to high-energy demand Saturday morning.

The company continues to ask for energy conservation during the extreme cold temperatures in the Carolina to help avoid rotating outages in the early morning hours of Christmas Day. Energy conservation can help keep power on for all customers.

Some basic energy conservation steps customers can take:

  • Select the lowest comfortable thermostat setting and bump it down several degrees whenever possible.

  • Avoid using large appliances – this means appliances with a three-pronged plug, such as dishwashers, ovens and dryers – during high-demand periods like early winter mornings.

  • Shift non-essential activities, like laundry, to late evening hours when power demand is lower.

  • Charge electric vehicles overnight.

  • If you have an electric water heater, limit the use of hot water as much as possible.

  • For more energy-saving, bill-lowering tips, check out our Lower-My-Bill toolkit.

If your power is off, turn off appliances and other electrical devices that may have been on when the power went out, so there’s not an immediate surge on the system when power is restored.

Panthers look great against the Lion at home, win 37-23The Panthers took it to the Lions on Christmas eve with a franchise record of 570 offensive yards, which included 320 yards on the ground. Sam Darnold looked good, going 15 of 22, with no turnovers. He also rushed for 21 yards and a score. The Panthers offensive line looked great all day, imposing their will in both air and ground attacks, while opening gaping holes  for running backs, and keeping Darnold clean for zero sacks. It was an exciting game to watch, with both running backs  D'Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard having big days. Foreman ended the day with 21 carries for 165 yards and a touchdown, while Hubbard had 12 carries for 125 yards.Next week is a big week for the Panthers, as they travel to Tampa Bay to take on Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.
