What's up with Piedmont Lithium?Piedmont Lithium rolled out plans for a Gaston County lithium mine last July to the Gaston County commissioners..Residents turned out en masse in opposition. County commissioners were surprised to find out that Piedmont Lithium had been working on the project for five years, and had already spent millions on the project- all without the the county's knowledge.Piedmont has applied for a state mining permit, a process which is ongoing due to delays in lab testing. Should they get state approval, Piedmont would still need county approval, which would entail a rezoning of the 1500 acre site, and a special use permit.In the meantime, Piedmont has announced plans to begin lithium production in Quebec in 2023, and Ghana in 2024.
Arsonist starts fire at Tony's Ice CreamSomeone started a fire last Thursday morning at Tony's Ice Cream in downtown Gastonia. Firefighters responded to the scene at 5:45 AM last Thursday.A surveillance video shows a subject breaking a window and pouring a flammable accelerent inside, then running away. More fingers in the pie at Kings Mountain casino?Beside the ex-governor's husband and the brother of U.S. Congressman, evidently two Cleveland County officials who supported the casino are in line to make money from the casino as well.Former Cleveland County Manager David Dear held 875 shares in Kings Mountain Equipment Supply (KMES) in 2020. KMES will evidently receive about 20% of the casino's revenue. Former Cleveland County commissioner Eddie Holbrook is part owner of Moose & Peanut Butter LLC, which owns 625 shares out of a total of 46,643. Dear and Holbrook were early supporters of the casino.At issue is the Indian Regulatory Gaming Act, which states that the Tribe maintains sole proprietary interest in it's gaming operation.

Changes may be coming.Northlake Mall has high vacancy rates- the mall had an occupancy rate of 69.4 in June, as compared to 93% in 2020. They are still in receivership, according to Spinoso Real Estate Group, waiting for the real estate market to stabilize before the mall can be sold.In contrast, Simon owned properties have a 93.9% occupancy rate. Those local Simon properties include SouthPark, Concord Mills, and Charlotte Premium Outlets.All the news is not bad, however. Evidently Juicy Crab is opening there, and several other stores are planned.

The winner could take the prize as an annuity that pays $365,000 every year for the rest of the winner’s life. After 20 years, that would add up to $7.3 million, after 30 years $10.9 million, and so on for life.
The winner could choose instead to take the prize as a lump-sum amount of $5.75 million, officials said.

Panthers not shopping DarnoldDespite rumors to the contrary, the Panthers are not shopping Sam Darnold, according to sources. Darnold and Baker Mayfield have both been taking reps in practice, with Coach Matt Ruhle not putting a timetable on the starting position until after the preseason game with the Patriots.Having said that, most folks expect Baker Mayfield to be the #1 QB. We are also looking forward to seeing how Ole Miss product Matt Corral progresses.The Panthers season starts this Saturday with a preseason game at Washington. The Game begins at 1 PM.

This position performs athletic and recreation program planning, coordination, facilitation, and administrative support of the Parks and Recreation Department. Excellent customer service skills are required. Applicant will assist in maintaining programs, facilities, and events under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director. Considerable knowledge of resources, materials, game rules, equipment and facilities utilized in a public recreation program; including necessary maintenance of athletic fields and facilities is required; as well as operation of standard maintenance equipment (mowers, string trimmers, field drags, etc.). Work schedule will require frequent nights, weekends, and holidays. Graduation from a two-year college or university with an Associate’s degree in physical education, business administration, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A Bachelor’s degree with major course work in recreation administration, physical education, or related field and considerable experience in recreational programming is preferred. Possession of CPR and First Aid Certification to be obtained within 6 months of employment. Hiring range for this position is $39,188--$43,577 DOQ, with a 5% increase upon successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.
