Former O'Charleys becoming new Mexican seafood restaurantThe former O'Charleys restaurant on Franklin in Gastonia is becoming a Mariscos Sayulita Nayarit seafood restaurant. I'll have to say, the menu looks pretty incredible. They have 18 locations in the Southeast, and have several locations in North Carolina alreadyIn Spanish, Mariscos means seafood, Nayarit is a state in Mexico on the Pacific just above Puerto Vallarta, and Sayulita is a beach town. Historic Tobacco Mural Uncovered on East Main AvenueA local developer in downtown Gastonia recently uncovered a hidden piece of history—a vintage Piedmont Tobacco mural—while renovating a recently purchased building on East Main Avenue.
Piedmont, once a major North Carolina tobacco brand produced in Durham, was known for its affordable cigarettes and collectible baseball cards included in each pack. Murals like this—often called “ghost signs”—are rare relics of early 20th-century advertising and hold significant historical value.
The developer plans to preserve the mural as part of the building’s revitalization. Stay tuned for more details on the two new businesses that will soon surround this iconic piece of Gastonia’s past.

Casa Azul scheduled to open next weekendCasa Azul in the former Hooters location in Gastonia is tentatively scheduled to open next weekend, according to owner Angel Zaragoza. They have what they hope is a final inspection by the county today.

Company moving from Charlotte to GastoniaMAT Holdings (formerly Midwest Air Technologies) is moving from Charlotte to 325 Lineberger Road in Gastonia. The new space is 511,661 square feet..much larger than their previous space in Charlotte.The company will bring 55 employees, and plans to hire 20 more.MAT Holdings is a manufacturer, marketing, and distribution company in the automotive and consumer markets.
NC Attorney General Jeff Jackson visits Gastonia's Dream Center AcademyNC Attorney General Jeff Jackson was in town last week, and visited Gastonia's Dream Center Academy.The Dream Center Academy is a local treasure. Their programs are intentionally designed to keep their students on target is school and prepare them for a successful transition to the next steps in their academic career. They offer their students with a five-week summer and a daily after-school program throughout their middle and high school academic years.But budget cuts of $165 million could impact their very successful after school programs that prepare students for college and vocational training.
Cramerton receives $500k grant to extend greenwaysImagine being able to walk from downtown Cramerton to McAdenville in December to see the Christmas lights. A new $500,000 grant to Cramerton will give that greenway project a jump-start.The entire project will cost more than $2 million to complete, and will be largely grant funded, according to Cramerton Mayor Nelson Willis.

Belmont's Piedmont Lithium merger delayedPiedmont Lithium had hoped shareholders would approve a merger with Sayona Mining Ltd. on July 31, but only 41.5% of the shares were represented. The company hopes to have a quorum and will try again on August 11. If approved, Sayona will be the controlling entity, and the merged firm will be called Elevra Lithium. Piedmont's holdings include the Gaston County project, which has been hampered by a slump in lithium prices, and push-back from local citizens and government officials.
