County Commissioners Vote to Move Monument After the Commissioners appointed "Council of Understanding" voted 7-5 to move the statue, the commissioners decided to direct the county attorney to work towards drafting a bill that would go to the North Carolina Assembly to allow local voters to decide the fate of the statue.Once it was determined that the bill would not make this years November ballot, Gaston county Chair Tracy Philbeck and Commissioner Allen Fraley sponsored a resolution to give the statue to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The resolution passed with a 6-1 vote.  The statue will be conveyed within ten days. It  will be  moved within six months at county expense, at a cost of $200,000.

Woman at Tony's Protest Given 30 DaysLydia Maria Robinson was jailed on charges of criminal contempt on Sunday in Gastonia. . Evidently she had come to the magistrates office to complain about a death threat she had received on her phone. After it was determined not to be a death threat, she was asked to leave. Robinson continued to banter with the magistrate and videoed portions of the exchange.Cell pones are not allowed in Magistrate Court, and there are posted signs to that effect.Robinson currently has no bond because she is serving an active sentence and not awaiting trial. She can appeal the sentence to Superior  Court, and would likely have a bond set within 24 hours by a District Court judge.

Governor Coopers "Phase 2" Expires Friday at 5 PM

Unless he changes his mind, that is.

Moving into the next phase could allow gyms, yoga studios, bars, movie theaters and museums to open. It could also increase capacity limits at restaurants and raise the number of people allowed to congregate at indoor and outdoor gatherings. We'll see.

Movie withdrawal? Movie theaters in South Carolina can reopen at half capacity as of yesterday. Moviegoers will be required to wear a mask.

It turns out that Carolinians are buying more ice cream and less deodorant while we are working from home...(did you just sniff yourself?)

The Federal unemployment benefit of $600 expired July 25th. Eligible folks can still receive NC benefits, which are capped at $350 per week for 13 weeks.Both Republicans and Democrats seem to agree on new $1200 stimulus checks, but disagree on a new unemployment amount.

 11 People Have Died of Covid-19  Since Last Tuesday

11 people have died of Covid-19 in Gaston County since last Tuesday. To date, we have had 3,035 positive tests, and currently have 1341 active cases, 1653 recovered, and 41 deaths. Check out Gaston County's new dashboard here. Dr.Anthony Fauci says he is hopeful that we will have a vaccine by the end of 2020 or early 2021.
