Tomorrow is the first day of school for Gaston CountyParents are happy, kids are sadGaston County Schools will welcome approximately 30,000 students (pre-kindergarten through high school) to its 56 schools when the yellow buses roll and school bells ring on Wednesday to start the 2024-2025 academic year. Elementary and middle schools begin school at 7:30 a.m. And conclude at 2:30 p.m., and high school begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m.Back to school info here...

Gastonia Conn's, Badcock Home Furnishings  closingConn's Home Plus is closing all stores after filing for bankruptcy in July. This includes the Gastonia store. Badcock Home furnishings, which is owned by Conn's, is also closing all  stores, as well as the Gastonia store.Conn's and Badcock are offering 30-50% discounts online and in store.Conn's has been de-listed from the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Ranlo's Kaylyn Brown and Team USA win silver in mixed 4x400 relay

Congrats Kaylyn Brown and Team USA. They won the mixed 4x400 relay in Paris on Saturday.Team USA broke their own record — 3:08.8 set at the 2023 World Championships.Fellow relay runners were Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon.The mixed relay is fairly new to the Olympics. The teams consist of two men and two women.Congratulations Kaylyn- we are proud of you!

Big Lots closing locations, Belmont safe for nowBig lots is struggling, closing up to 315 locations this year.That represents about 22% of it's current 1389 stores. It appears that the Belmont store is safe for now.

Hunter Huss to begin offering cosmetology programGaston county schools will begin offering a cosmetology program at Hunter Huss High School as part of Gaston County School's Career and Technical Education Program.Currently there are 16 seniors and 20 juniors involved in the program. Seniors will complete one year at Hunter Huss, and three terms at Gaston College, while juniors will complete two years in the program at Hunter Huss, and two terms at Gaston College. Upon completion, they will be eligible to take the state exam to become licensed cosmetologist.

Hangar 618 project in the FUSE DistrictThe Hangar 618 project in the FUSE District was originally slated to be completed Spring of 2023. We are hearing that permitting and utilities are taking longer than expected. A possible opening is 90 days away.The project is at 618 West Franklin Boulevard, and was part of the old Coca-Cola complex.

Gaston College's new basketball coach has a familiar name for local UNC Charlotte graduates. After all, Benny Moss is connected to the two winningest coaches in Charlotte 49ers' basketball history - and one of them is expected to now become a frequent Gaston College supporter.

Moss was recruited to Charlotte by Jeff Mullins before later playing and coaching for Bobby Lutz. Moss' connection to Lutz dates to when Moss' high school coach Mike Burge regularly took his East Surry High teams to Pfeiffer College team camps when Lutz was the Falcons' head coach. After spending three injury-plagued seasons for Mullins at Charlotte, Moss concluded his college playing career for Lutz before later spending time as Lutz's assistant coach at Pfeiffer and for the 49ers' during highly-successful tenures at both schools.

"He's my mentor," Moss said of Lutz. "I love him and I think the world of him."He was really good at helping me get my first head coaching opportunity at Wilmington. I talk to him all the time. And he thought this was a great opportunity to work with (Gaston College president) Dr. (John) Hauser and (Gaston College athletic director and baseball) Shohn Doty because he shared their vision for this place."
