Good morning Gaston County, David here.Today is April 8th..Lots of restaurant news today. We have a pretty active restaurant scene here in Gaston County. I occasionally hear people complaining about Gaston County restaurants closing, but have you been to Charlotte? Restaurants close there every day. Usually the restaurants that close are concepts that most likely aren't working elsewhere either.  And available restaurant spaces here in Gaston County don't seem to stay vacant for very long.

Did you watch the game last night? Congrats to the Florida Gators- NCAAA Champs! (I know my friends Berry and Judi are thrilled!) Congrats also to the UCONN Huskies women's basketball team!

Tuesday's weather: Cooler, sunny,  high of 63.Tonight: Clear and chilly  with  a low of 37.

No Bucc-ees for Gastonia...at least not yet

There was a pretty serious looking post on Facebook that Buc-ees was going to take over the Eastridge Mall property... but it was an April Fool's joke. The manager of the mall says no Buc-ees.  So you'll have to go to RayNathans for that brisket sandwich.

Half Way Cooks opens behind Summit Bottle Shop & TaproomHalf Way Cooks has opened on the patio  behind the Summit Taproom in Mount Holly. Owner Jonathon Todd says the menu is designed as "elevated street food". Summit has been open going on 7 years, and up until February that had a rotating cast of food trucks out front. Todd says their new spot serves food "inspired" by food trucks...but elevated. Think Ahi tuna nachos, 3 cheese blend house roasted pimento cheese with crispy won ton chips drizzled with a soy ginger glaze, and more...

Ruby's Soul food & BBQ openingRuby's Soul Food & BBQ will have a soft opening the 9th ( tomorrow) at 11:00 AM, and a grand opening the 12th at 11:00 AM.They will serve all the soul food favorites, and Chicago style BBQ. That means ribs and rib tips, and hot links (spicy, coarsely ground sausage) which will be pork or turkey. They are located at 2431 East Ozark Avenue in Gastonia, Mr. 3's Crab Pot was most recently in that location, and Fat Cat's before that. And before that, it was actually a BBQ  restaurant, so it's come full circle. Sort of.

Casa Maya Cafe & Restaurant has openedCasa Maya Cafe & Restaurant opened yestaerday at 1003 Union Road in Gastonia. They serve Honduran and Central American food. That location was previously Casa De Juli's and before that it was Chantilly's Tea Room.

Downstairs Ice Cream  held their grand opening last week. I tried their BrownButter Maple recently and it was killer!  Love Tony's and Handel's, but Downstairs is closer to Jenni's, maybe even better! They make their ice cream in house, rotate flavors, and now make their own waffle cones-yow!

Most popular casual dining chain?Speaking of restaurant news, Texas Roadhouse has replaced Olive Garden as America's top casual dining chain. Those two were followed by Chili's, Applebees, and Buffalo Wild Wings. I rarely, if ever, go to any of those...prefer local places.
