Gastonia Sake burnsThe Gastonia location of Sake Express caught fire last Friday morning.. The damage was extensive and it will take them some time to rebuild. The Gastonia Fire Department ruled the blaze accidental and no one was hurt. The following is a statement from Lisa Nguyen, co-owner of Sake Express:

"As many of you know, Sake Express experienced a devastating fire this morning at our Gastonia restaurant. The outpouring of love and support following this tragedy has been beautiful. Thank you for the thoughtful messages, the kind words and the heartfelt encouragement.

A fire can be absolutely disastrous for a small business like ours. But I promise that my sister and I, and our beloved Sake, will come out better and stronger. We will make repairs, we will rebuild our restaurant and we will uphold our father's legacy in Gastonia.

I want to thank the Gastonia, fire department for putting out this fire so quickly and safely. Thank you again. Your love and support is so very appreciated."

Gaston County Museum future uncertainThe Gaston County Museum of Art and History's future may be uncertain. In a work session last Tuesday, Gaston County manager Kim Eagle asked for input from the County Commissioners regarding the continued funding of the museum.A picture of from the Charlotte Pride Parade of 2019 was removed from an exhibit in the museum by order of Ms. Eagle in June of 2022. The picture and it's removal caused a great deal of controversy. MS. Eagle contends that the museum and it's continued funding was on her lagenda since last April, and the current conversation has nothing to do with the controversy surrounding the picture. The museum represents approximately .25%, or less than 1% of the Gaston County budget. In addition, before 2020 and Covid, every 3rd and 4th grader in the county saw programming from the museum. The museum sponsors the county wide student art exhibit, with over 800 students of all ages participating. They also own 83,000 items of Gaston County history. Many of these items are in storage and are displayed when appropriate. After some research, we find that museum funding models are all over the place. However, most are a public private partnership, with some combination of local government and state funding, along with a non-profit  501(c)(3).

Special meeting of Museum supportersDue to recent concerns over County funding for our museum, the Board of Trustees will be holding a special meeting for all museum supporters on Thursday, April 13th at 5pm in the Anne Biggers Furr Learning Depot, 205 W. Main St, Dallas N.C. 28034. Consultants from the recent benchmarking study will be present to answer questions, as well as board members, museum leadership, and County management.
