Piedmont Lithium timeline uncertain at bestBetween a multi-step approvals process and harsh public push back, Piedmont Lithium faces an uphill battle to place a lithium mine and processing facility in Gaston County.The first step would be for Piedmont Lithium to obtain a permit from the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Energy, Mineral , and Land Resources.Piedmont hopes to get that permit in April. Next, Piedmont would need county approval to rezone their land, which is about 1500 acres.And last, Piedmont will need a special-use permit for their project.Piedmont had hoped to start construction this year, but that depends on their progress in obtaining permits.
Buyers show interest in former Belmont Middle SchoolCurrently there are two bids on the former Belmont Middle School in downtown Belmont. Pearson Properties of Gastonia bid $2.5 million on January 26. Swing It Boys 29 made an offer on February 9th of $2.75 million. The county had the property apprised at $1.9 million.Roy Maxwell, Infrastructure and Asset Manager for Gaston County said “The bidding will go as longs as the bids continue.
Belmont Tourism Development, an advisory body established to promote and develop tourism in Belmont, provided hotel information in the event a bidder is considering that option. We do not know whether that is an end use that Belmont will support, or whether any bidders are interested in that concept,”
