Caromont's new hospital in Belmont is now openCaromont's new hospital in Belmont opened last Wednesday, the 8th. Construction of the $250 million dollar hospital began in 2021.The new hospital has 54 inpatient beds, 16 emergency department rooms, a labor and delivery unit, and a surgical suite with two operating rooms. The facility also boasts a 100,000 square foot medical office.

Sake Belmont closing
On Jan. 24, 2025, after 14 years of service from 675 Park Street, Sake Express will close its current Belmont, N.C., location.
Owners Lisa Nguyen and Linda Nguyen say that this isn't the end for Sake in Belmont; rather, it's an opportunity for change and growth in the burgeoning city. They are currently searching for a prominent, permanent location.
Although they will not have a presence in the City of Belmont temporarily, they look forward to returning with a new building and the same great flavors that customers have come to love. They also invite Sake fans to visit their location in Gastonia, N.C., during this brief hiatus.
Triad developer buys 25 acres Gastonia siteA Gastonia site for a proposed multifamily project has been bought by an entity associated with Wynnefield Properties. Wynnefield paid $1.6 million for the site in November.Late in 2022 the company went through a rezoning process to allow the development of 252 apartments at 680 Lynhaven Drive. The project was called The Lofts at Hudson. It is unclear if those plans are still in place.The Lynhaven property adjoins a neighboring site that was approved for 164 age-restricted apartments, called The Reserrve at Hudson.

Tyler Bullock named Executive Director of the Glenn FoundationTyler Bullock has been named Executive Director of the Carrie E. And Lena V. Glenn Foundation. Bullock is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, and worked at Sherwood Elementary for the last 20 years. Her father, Jim Stuart, was a former chairperson of the Glenn Foundation and was a founding trustee.The Foundation also announced the creation of the Lineberger and Garrison Family Fund, in honor of outgoing Executive Director Laura Lineberger.

Coach Meredith Scruggs has passedBeloved local coach Meredith Scruggs has passed. Scruggs played football and basketball at Gardner Webb, and coached wrestling at East Gaston for many years.We'll have more details as they become available.
An anonymous company could bring 350 new jobs to BelmontAn anonymous Chinese company could bring 350 jobs and a $35 million dollar investment to Belmont. The average salary would be $51,000.The Belmont City Council has approved matching a Gaston County Level 3 Grant of $1.5 million. The state is also offering incentives. Belmont is one of six cities trying to attract the company. The company was supposed to announce their decision last month, but have not as of this time.The Belmont location would be off of Hickory Grove Road north of Interstate 85.

First United Methodist Church Gastonia hosts cold weather shelter
After temporarily hosting guests earlier this year, the First United Methodist Church of Gastonia has committed to hosting the Cold Weather Shelter to provide a warm place to sleep for unhoused members of the Gaston County community.
The location change began last Friday evening when the shelter opened for the night at 8:00. The church is hosting the shelter in its Family Life Center on the church’s campus at 190 E. Franklin Blvd.
The City of Gastonia and Gaston County had previously operated a Warming Station at the Gastonia Farmer’s Market.
The City and County will continue to provide the law enforcement officers to provide security for the shelter. In addition, the county will continue to work with FUMC Gastonia and to recruit and provide volunteers to staff the shelter.


Gaston County appoints new Social Service Director
Following the retirement of Angela Karchmer, Shannon Myers will join Gaston County as the new Department of Social Services (DSS) Director. She begins the role on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025.
Myers, who is currently pursuing her Ph. D in Organizational Development and Leadership from the University of Arizona Global Campus, comes to Gaston County from Mecklenburg County Social Services. There, she served as the Assistant Division Director overseeing Adult Social work and Community Social work program areas and the Age-Friendly Mecklenburg initiatives for the Services for the Adult Division.
Her commitment to advocating for vulnerable populations, staff development and organizational improvement, and improving the wellbeing of all residents makes her the best choice for the Gaston County Department of Social Services, said Assistant County Manager Steve Eaton.

Party City auctioning leases, including GastoniaParty City is auctioning off 21 store leases in North Carolina, including the Party City location at 3686 East Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia.Party City says they are closing all of their 700 stores after 40 years in business.
“The decision was made following exhaustive efforts by the company to find a path forward that would allow continued operations in an immensely challenging environment driven by inflationary pressures on costs and consumer spending, among other factors,” Party City said in a Dec. 21 statement. “As with many other retailers, macroeconomic headwinds more recently proved too severe for the company to overcome.”

Layoff no problem for Gaston College basketball as it wins 13th straight game

Nearly three weeks off did nothing to stop the winning momentum of the Gaston College basketball team Tuesday night as the Rhinos rolled to a 100-65 win at the Converse University developmental team.
The victory was the Rhinos' 13th straight after a season-opening loss to the top-ranked team in the country and improved Gaston College to 13-1.
"Obviously it's good to get one under your belt after coming off such a long break," first-year Rhinos coach Benny Moss said. "I was really pleased with the contributions we got from everybody."
Playing its first game since Dec. 18, Gaston College led for all but 1 1/2 minutes of Tuesday's road game.
