Today is May 31, 2022.Yesterday was Memorial Day- a day we honor all those who have given their lives in service of our country. Freedom isn't free, it comes at a great cost. Memorial Day is also the unofficial start of summer- time for getaways and cookouts!
We are about 26 days into our summer drive-about. We spent three days in New Orleans last week.The Good: Great music, delicious food, beautiful homes. The Bad: dirty, dirty city. Roads are atrocious- thank goodness we were in a Jeep.But the beignets- oh my goodness!

Good news for Gaston CountyGovernor Roy Cooper has announced that fresh foods manufacturer Hans Kissle Company will build a $42 million dollar food manufacturing facility in Gastonia's Apple Creek Corporate Center. The facility will create approximately 219 new jobs.

Gaston County Commissioners reduce property tax rateGaston County Commissioners voted last Tuesday to reduce the property tax rate from 83 cents of assessed value to 81 cents. Although residents may pay less as a percentage, they may actually pay more after next year's reevaluation. Tax bills are expected to rise as much as 30% said commissioner Tracy Philbeck.For the second consecutive year, the budget was balanced without the use of the fund balance, which is essentially a savings account.
Congrats to Jim Revels and Revels ContractingRCS Incorporated is the 12th largest veteran owned company in the Charlotte Metro area in a list compiled by the Charlotte Business Journal. RCS has 49 employees, and they do general and electrical contracting, Mr. Revels was in the Marines for 4 years, and started out as a journeyman electrician.

Fort Bragg to become Fort Liberty?A commission mandated by the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act was instructed to identify assets, including military bases, for ties to the Confederacy. (Fort Bragg is named after General Braxton Bragg, a Confederate officer and a slave owner). The commission was instructed to seek community input in the renaming process.There were 84,000 submissions, which were winnowed to 3,670, and then to 87. Fort Liberty did not make the shortlist. So evidently the commission pulled "Fort Liberty" out of thin air.The Cumberland County Veteran's Council suggested that Fort Bragg be renamed for Braxton Bragg's cousin, General Edward S. Bragg, who served in the Union Army...seems like a reasonable solution.As an aside, Braxton Bragg is generally considered among the worst generals in the Civil War.

Poteat to write history of Covenant Village
Gaston Gazette columnist and all around nice guy Bill Poteat has a new gig- he will be writing a history of Covenant Village. If you don't know, Covenant Village is an upscale "Life Plan Community" for seniors on Robinwood Road in Gastonia, founded in 1982. Bill was one of the best things about the Gazette, and he will be missed.Bill starts his new project in early June, and he may write an occasional column. We wish him the best and look forward to reading whatever he writes.
