It’s June, and summer is really here. When I was a kid, summer was the absolute best…riding bikes, playing in the woods, and going to the local pool. I tolerated school, but I loved summer. Now I see kids out occasionally in the summer, and I think-lucky you! This is the best time of your life, enjoy!

A bit of trivia for you- Marilyn Monroe would have been 100 years old yesterday. She is still a major cultural and fashion icon. Rest in peace Norma Jean.

So now within about a block on East Franklin in Gastonia, there are at least three chicken based restaurants. Viva Chicken has been there awhile, and now there is new Dave’s Hot Chicken, and a new Super Chix.

I took a friend to Dave’s Hot Chicken last week for his birthday. First impressions- the inside has sort of a cool graffiti look, and the menu was smaller than I expected.

We both ordered a Dave’s #2, which is 2 sliders with fries and pickles. (Note: 2 sliders is too much for lunch; one would have been plenty.) A Dave’s #2 is $14.49 and does not include a drink. So 2 meals and 2 drinks for lunch was a little under $35.

How was the chicken? You can order it with varying degrees of heat. We wimped out and got very light heat. The chicken was a little different because of the sauce they use, but basically it was fast food chicken. I would have liked slaw or something besides fries (and pickles) to balance the chicken.The menu says it comes with kale slaw, but evidently not much. Whatever.

Prognosis? Even if we had gotten single slider meals, lunch for 2 would have been about $28. A little pricey, but not too far out of line with other fast food places. The buttermilk chicken sandwich at Webb Custom Kitchen is ten times better at $15 each, but that’s not apples to apples. Dave’s Hot Chicken was good, but nothing to write home about. If you are a mozzarella cheese stick lover, you may want to try their Hot Mozz, which is mozzarella planks with their hot crispy breading on the outside. So fried cheese, french fries, and pickles. The staff told me that the Hot Mozz is popular, but maybe you should have your cholesterol checked after.

After many meaningful years in Belmont, Holy Angels has made the difficult decision to close Bliss Gallery on May 30. Our final exhibit ran through May 30, showcasing the artwork of Susanne Hawthorne. Her show, A Celebration of Joy, was a fitting tribute for this transition.  

Bliss Gallery has been a place where our residents’ artistic gifts have touched hearts and brought our community together. We are so grateful for the encouragement, kindness, and creativity that have filled this space over the past eight years. 

The old Vintage Whiskey & Cigar Bar space at 190 West Main Ave. in Gastonia is becoming BC Battery Lounge. They say they will have pool tables, a mechanical bull, handhelds and tapas, premium cocktails, and live entertainment.

They are looking at the end of the month or first of July as an opening date;

Downtown Gastonia is waking up from a long slumber! This is nowhere more evident than East Main Ave,. Miles Cafeteria is gone, but Savory Calle has reopened, Christian Jacobs Salon and Ride a Bike are on that block, and now the new Piedmont Delicatessen and Speakeasy is opening at 125 East Main Ave. Deli owner Jacinda Jacobs expects to be open June 22. Positive news for downtown Gastonia!

If you haven’t tried Barrister’s in downtown Gastonia (DTG), you are missing out. I have eaten at Barrister’s, but haven’t tried the patio. On a cool summer day it looks like a winner!

Chronicle Mill in Belmont-an adaptive re-use project with over 9000 square feet, has sold for $55.5 million. The apartment complex was bought by Harbor Group International as part of a $562 million dollar deal that involved 11 multi-family properties.
