Happy New Year! David here.
Today is January 13th, 2026.
How are you Gaston County? I hope this new year finds you happy and healthy and excited for what is to come. However, with things the way they are in the world, sometimes it is difficult to be optimistic. But then I remember this quote by Anne Frank “"In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again.” I wish you peace and joy in this new year.
Today’s weather: Sunshine and a few clouds, with a high of 59.
Tonight: Mainly clear and 38.

Cavendish Brewery closes, property to be redeveloped by Sugar Creek Brewing
The bad news is that Cavendish Brewery in Gastonia has closed, effective last week. The good news is that Sugar Creek Brewing has bought the site for $2 million. They plan to move their production facilities here, and add an upscale barbecue restaurant and a taproom. A distillery planned is for the future. Total investment is expected to be around $4 million.
The current faculties will be gutted and revamped. Timing for the move has not been announced.
Sugar Creek intends on maintaining a Charlotte presence; they are looking for additional taproom space. They also have plans for an 8000 square foot facility in Salisbury that will include a taproom and beer garden.
Queen’s Feast returns January 23rd-Februry 1st
Queen’s Feast is returning! Queen's Feast is Metro Charlotte's Restaurant Week,a bi-annual event where over 100 local restaurants offer special pre fixe menus (typically 3 courses)at fixed, lower prices, for a limited time, allowing diners to explore diverse cuisines and new spots across the metro area without overspending. Reservations are strongly recommended.
Local restaurants participating are Drift on Lake Wylie, M.E.P. American Casual Cuisine (At Floyd & Blackies), Old Stone Steakhouse, Southern Artisian Spirits (Kings Mountain) Click here for a full listing and more information.
Elevra Lithium (formerly Piedmont Lithium) moving to pink sheets
Not good news for Elevra Lithium, but maybe for opponents of the proposed lithium mine near Cherryville in Gaston County. Elevra Lithium, formerly Piedmont Lithium, has announced that as of January 30, they will be moving from OTCQB Venture market, to the unsponsored Pink Limited Market.
What does this mean? The Pink Limited Market is a tier within the OTC Markets (Over-The-Counter) where companies have very limited public financial information, often due to financial distress, bankruptcy, or an unwillingness to meet higher disclosure standards, signaling high risk to investors, identified by a "yield sign" warning for investors to proceed with caution. It's part of the speculative Pink Sheets market for stocks not on major exchanges, featuring penny stocks and struggling firms, with minimal regulatory oversight compared to OTCQB or OTCQX. So a move to the pink sheets does not inspire confidence in investors.

The Catawba Creek Greenway extension is officially open!
Following a ribbon-cutting celebration held on Tuesday, January 6, the Catawba Creek Greenway extension is officially open in Gastonia. This milestone project fulfills a key goal of the City of Gastonia’s adopted Greenway Plan and expands access to safe, connected outdoor spaces for our community.
City leadership joined Senator Brad Overcash and North Carolina Representative Kelly Hastings, along with project partners and community members, to celebrate the completion of the new trail segment and bridge after months of construction and temporary closures.
Now it’s your turn! Lace up your walking shoes, grab your bike, or bring the family and take a stroll through the newest addition to Gastonia’s growing greenway system at Robinwood Road. Thank you for your patience, and enjoy the trail!
